Helen Quiocho Nelson, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, niece and treasured member of the Lahaina community, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2025, at the age of 74. Born on November 28, 1950, in Honolulu, Helen was the daughter of Florinda Martinez and Gene Quiocho. She grew up in Waikiki, before moving to Maui and graduating from Lahainaluna High School in the class of 1968. She went on to attend Kapiolani Community College, receiving an associate’s degree in accounting.
Helen’s professional journey began with various front office and hospitality positions in West Maui. She eventually found her calling in accounting, rising to the position of Credit Manager at the Hyatt Regency Maui, where she dedicated over 30 years to excellence and fostering camaraderie among her colleagues. Her commitment and work ethic made her a respected and admired member of the Hyatt family.
A devout Catholic, Helen’s faith guided every aspect of her life. She was an active volunteer at Maria Lanakila Catholic Church, serving in numerous capacities before becoming the official wedding coordinator in 2012. Helen’s voice rang out in the church choir, and she could often be found reading the liturgy at mass or leading Sacred Hearts Society meetings and fundraisers as president for many years. Her devotion also extended to Sacred Hearts School, where she remained a valued supporter throughout her daughter’s attendance and for many years following her graduation, chairing and co-chairing Country Kitchen during the annual Bazaar.
Helen’s generous spirit was evident in her tireless efforts for Relay for Life, serving as chairperson for the Lahaina relay in the early 2000s. Her compassion and leadership left a lasting legacy in the fight against cancer and in the hearts of all who participated.
Above all, Helen’s family was her greatest joy. She shared nearly 40 years of marriage with her devoted husband, Erik. Helen was a loving and steadfast mother to Melissa, Aliitasi and Dane. Her grandchildren, Clayton, Calvin, and Millie, were the light of her life, and she embraced the role of “Lola” with boundless love, support, patience, and delight. She was, as her family fondly recalls, her very best self when with her grandchildren.
Helen is survived by her beloved husband Erik; her daughters Melissa (Corey) Scribner and Aliitasi Nelson; her son Dane Nelson; and her adored grandchildren Clayton, Calvin, and Millie. She leaves behind an extended network of family, friends, and community members whose lives were touched by her kindness, generosity, and unwavering faith.
Her family invites all who knew her to attend her funeral mass at 12PM at Maria Lanakila Catholic Church on October 24, 2025, with a visitation starting at 10AM. Helen’s legacy is one of love, service, and devotion. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her memory will remain a guiding light and source of inspiration.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Maria Lanakila Catholic Church in her honor.
