The family would later move back to Maui where Henry attended Kaunoa School (K-8). He lived a carefree life riding his bike with friends through the cane fields, diving, and spearfishing. His father taught him to play guitar; his uncle taught him Ki’ Hoalu (Hawaiian slack key guitar). Henry later attended Baldwin High school where he was an outstanding athlete in football and track & field. After graduating in 1961, he attended Pasadena Community College. Henry received his bachelor’s degree from UH Manoa.
While in California, Henry met North Dakota’s Diane Conradson. They married on September 2, 1967. The couple moved to Portland, OR where he earned his Masters degree at Portland State University before moving to Oahu, then Maui. They would live most of their marriage in Kula.
Henry was a popular educator who began his career at Dole Intermediate in Kalihi. He transferred to Baldwin in 1969 where he served as media specialist/teacher and began coaching Baldwin’s football team through many winning seasons. He also coached Track & Field and shared his gift of guitar and love of Hawaiian music with his students, one being Kevin Brown, whose music we all enjoy to this day.
Henry later served at both Maui High and Kihei School (both as vice principal), and worked at the Department of Education building as Media Specialist. In 1994 he began work at Kamehameha Schools (Media Specialist & Distance Learning Manager).
Henry relocated to Honolulu and married Lynne Gartley Galluzzi on September 9, 1999. He would retire from Kamehameha Schools in 2006.
Henry’s retirement years were enjoyed with friends on both Oahu and Maui with whom he shared his love of Hawaiian music. He was an ardent fan of the UH rainbows, college football, and horse racing (especially the Kentucky Derby). He also loved the Vegas sports book and frequented the craps table while in town, Reunions with former students and football players were a constant source of joy to him throughout the years.
A true “Maui Boy”, Henry never lost his love for the island and returned to spend his last year there. He passed away on September 4, 2025 in Kahului.
