

John was born on June 12, 1954, at Tripler Medical Center to Joan Catherine Stevens Engman and Axel Francis Petterson. He spent his younger years honing his skills in finish carpentry and cabinetry work. In the 1970s, he began working at Baders in the cabinetry department, specializing in finish work. In 1978, John moved to Maui where he contributed his craftsmanship to projects at the Hyatt and Sheraton resorts. Later, he proudly started his own finish carpentry business, Maui Installation, which he operated until his retirement.
John found great joy in the outdoors and loved spending time fishing for ulua, diving, and taking regular hunting trips to Lana‘i for mouflon and deer. He appreciated the simple pleasures of island life and cherished the time spent with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Joan Catherine Stevens Engman; his father, Axel Francis Petterson; and his brother, Mark Axel Petterson.
John is survived by his sister, Sarah Elizabeth Petterson; step-sister, Eloise Engman; his children, Michael J. Petterson, Jonas I. Petterson, Candice (Graylen) Ducosin, and Samantha K. Petterson; and his beloved grandchildren, Michael J. Petterson Jr., Amy M. Petterson, Nainoa K. Nipper, Nalukea J. Nipper, and Hali‘a K. Ducosin.
Services will be held on June 14, 2026, at Keokea Hall. Service begins at 11:30 a.m. with lunch to follow.
John will be remembered for his hard working spirit, skilled craftsmanship, and love for the ocean, the outdoors, and his family.
