Manuel Freitas “Jr.” of Haiku, Maui passed away on August 2, 2025 peacefully at his home surrounded by his family and joined our heavenly Lord.
He was born on January 15, 1933 in Paia to Manuel Sr. and Mary Bella Freitas and was raised in Kaheka Camp, Paia along with his 5 siblings. His family moved to Kokomo when “Jr.” was in elementary school and as he’s parents relied on him to help build their home in Kokomo was unable to continue his schooling.
He worked at Maui Land & Pineapple as a labor field worker, then with the State of Hawaii (Forestry Division) where he loved nature and the island mountains. He knew the mountains like the back of his hand. As an animal lover he made a change and worked for the County of Maui as a dog warden for the Humane Society, where he retired from.
He loved his family to the utmost and was a devoted father, husband and supported his family dearly and was a dear friend to many. It wasn’t a day that went by without giving the best advice he could to either his family or friends or former hunters. On his spare time he was a vivid Hunter, which he enjoyed the sport very much from a young age along with raising his fighting chicken birds and enjoyed wrenching as a mechanic rather it was a car, motorcycle, tractor etc. He was well known for his Portuguese sausage that he shared dearly and a recipe that was passed onto him from his Dad and Mom. He was always there whenever you needed a helping hand and enjoyed talking story or someone you could rely on.
“Jr.” will be deeply missed, although the memories will always be with us.
