Maynard Gerald Olson, 73, of Kula passed away unexpectedly on June 28, 2024, at Maui Memorial Medical Center. Maynard was born on June 20, 1951, in Washington State. He grew up in the Grays Harbor area, later moving to Seattle for several years. After Seattle, he worked for a year in Alaska, living on a seafood processing ship. In 1980 he went to Maui on vacation, and never left. It was there that he was introduced by mutual friends to his future wife Elaine.
Maynard worked as an electronics technician for 29 years on the summit of Haleakala for AMOS Observatory, retiring in 2012. Maynard had a passion for fixing things. If something was broken, you could count on Maynard to fix it. He especially liked working on very old Apple computers. He would buy non-working laptops, then repair and upgrade them to run even better than before. His goal was to keep them out of landfills. Recycling, solar power, and preserving the environment were major priorities for him. His favorite things included walking the dogs, all kinds of music, and good beer. In his younger years he enjoyed riding his Harley motorcycle. His kind friendly nature and humor will truly be missed.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years Elaine Olson, son Patrick Olson, and niece Jodi Walker. Also, his constant canine companions Buddy, Lucy, and Snowball. He was preceded in death by his parents Maynard and Juanita Olson, and his brother Kirk Olson. A celebration of life will be announced in the future. Donations in his name can be made to the Mayo Clinic in Arizona or the Maui Food Bank.
