June 15, 1933- July 19, 2026
Robert “Bob” Lee Powell was born in Long Beach, California on June 15, 1933 to William and Dorothy Powell.
Bob had many fond memories of growing up in Long Beach, spending time at the beach, the Pike, and working at his Uncle’s store. He attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School where he met the love of his life Nelsie Ann Patchett. He and Nelsie Ann married shortly after and started their family.
In 1958, Bob’s brother-in-law asked him to come to Hawaiʻi to help him in construction. After being in Hawaiʻi for a few months he moved Nelsie Ann and their four young children to ‘Ewa Beach, where they raised their family. Over time, Bob learned to do drywall and eventually became President of the Taper’s Union and started the Taper’s Apprenticeship program. Bob was very active in the Democratic party.
In 1972, Bob and Nelsie Ann moved to Maui where they became Managers of the Kihei Sands condominiums for 9 years before moving back to Long Beach to care for their aging parents. While in California, Bob worked for Nissan in the Shipping and Receiving department which included maintenance and repairs.
However, Hawaiʻi called them home and they returned once again in 2000 as the Managers of Kihei Sands until their retirement in 2006. Bob enjoyed being involved in the Lions club, woodworking, whalewatching, photography, music and technology, and hosting Aloha Friday gatherings with Nelsie Ann.
Bob was a loving husband, Daddy, Papa and friend. He is survived by his four children Guy (Cathy), Craig (Margie), Winter (Butch), and Gini, 15 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and his sister Debra (Bob), sister-in-law Virginia, brother-in-law Richard and many nieces and nephews.
The family wants to thank Hospice Maui and everyone who loved Bob and Nelsie Ann so well. Private services will be held at a later date.
