

Alma was born to Floyd (Gent) and Rosa Lee Hanson Darrett, December 11, 1919, in the DeSoto Parish, Baton Rouge, Louisianna. She was the eldest of 13 children.
Alma enjoyed a full and vibrant life which she shared with her husband of 66 years, John Howard Coleman. They were married December 18, 1950 in Alice, Texas. Together they traveled the world as a military family of the United States Air Force.
In 1960 John received orders to travel to Tokyo, Japan. Alma created a home in Japan and embraced the Japanese culture and lifestyle. Alma learned to make beautiful Japanese dolls in glass cases. It was in Japan that Alma introduced her husband John to the game of golf, which he played with love and passion until his passing in 2016.
Upon leaving Japan, Alma had the opportunity to travel to Europe. They were stationed in Ramstein, Germany and there she opened a ceramic shop where she taught the art to all who wanted to learn.
In 1977 the family returned to the United States, John was reassigned to the Pentagon and the family began a new life in the DMV eventually settling in Bryans Road, Maryland where they lived until 2014.
Alma was a devoted member of Metropolitan United Methodist Church in Indian Head, Maryland for well over 30 years.
Alma’s passions were quilting and crafting, gardening and canning, fishing, Bingo, and her most favorite spot… Dover Downs.
To cherish her memory, Alma leaves her children, Clarence and La Dessa Coleman. She was blessed to see her grandchildren grow into young adulthood, Delanisha Mia, Anthony Spencer Gray, Jr. Ciera Green, Josiah Alexander Barrington and Aliyjah Symone Coleman. Her great-grandchildren were the apples of her eye, Anthony (TJ) Spencer III, Ania Shauntice, and Allana Simone Gray; Leighton Josiah, Leia Yasmeen, and Niarra Jhene Coleman. She was also blessed with a great-great grandson, Anthony (AJ) Spencer, IV, a son-in-law, Wardell Bennett; and a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Coleman.
Preceding Alma were her parents Floyd (Gent) and Rosalee Darrett, Louisianna, siblings Sam, Eva, Velma, Berneice, Clay, Edna, Retha, Will, Ernestine, and Leonard. Her sons, Jessie Lee (1944) and Frank James Williams (1963). Alma is survived by her sister Doris Shotwell and brother Eugene Darrett. Her life is celebrated by a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives, many friends, both near and far and her Metropolitan Church Family.
