Anne Elizabeth Marino, 84, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 30, 2020 in Richmond, Virginia after enjoying a long, beautiful life. Anne, mother of four, was affectionately known as “Nany” to her four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Born in Mason City, Washington, on March 19, 1936, Anne was the only daughter of the late John B. Cunning and Ann Lillian Cunning and stepdaughter of Rose A. Cunning. Anne’s younger brother John B. Cunning, Jr. fondly remembers their childhood growing up in the seaside community of Winthrop, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston. The proximity to the ocean spurred Anne’s lifelong love of the beach – especially the Outer Banks, North Carolina, where she would vacation with her family later in life.
In November 1957, Anne married the late Richard Marino who served in the U.S. Navy stationed in Boston. They had four children, Kathleen, Richard, Lorraine and Sharon. After living in Winthrop for more than 30 years, Anne moved her family to Waldorf, Maryland, where they stayed for nearly 20 years and raised their children. Anne eventually moved to Hopewell, Virginia and later to Richmond, Virginia.
Despite leaving Massachusetts, Anne was always proud of her Boston roots—and her feisty personality and love of clam chowder and lobster rolls was proof. Anne worked in bookkeeping before she was married, and while raising her four children, she continued working in administrative positions with Eagle Electric, Diversified Mailing and the U.S. Government. Her children fondly remember traveling back to Massachusetts for Fourth of July celebrations each summer, as well as their childhood pets Rebel and Bryars.
Anne was blessed with four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She lived ten minutes away from her grandkids when they were growing up. She was always in attendance at their dance recitals, sporting events and school graduations. She looked forward to family vacations in the Outer Banks and weekend mornings with donuts. There was nothing that made Anne happier than a walk to the local ice cream shop in Nags Head with her grandkids.
On Sundays, you would find Anne cheering on her beloved Washington Redskins. She would invite her family over to watch the game, snack on Charles Chips, cheddar cheese and popcorn, and like all passionate fans, yell (curse) at the TV. Anne also loved all things Minnie Mouse. She was proud to celebrate her retirement in 2004 by taking her grandkids on vacation to Disney World, and at age 65, she got a tattoo of Minnie “with sass” on her lower ankle during a summer beach vacation. She enjoyed going out to eat, especially for a very rare steak, extra chocolatey dessert and Irish Coffee. Anne’s philosophy was to never skip dessert. Even better – skip the meal and go straight to dessert. Anne affectionately called her close family (and pets) “babe.”
Anne was thrilled to have the opportunity to attend her granddaughter Nikki’s wedding in Los Angeles, California in 2015 and her grandson Chip’s wedding in Kennebunkport, Maine in 2014. She loved going on adventures with her granddaughter Kyrie – who brought her everywhere from Dollywood to the local nail salon to get her favorite purple pedicure. Her granddaughter Sam always knew how to make her smile with her witty personality and beautiful photography and artwork. When the great grandchildren arrived, Anne loved the baby snuggles and when the whole family would travel back to Virginia for Christmas.
Here to honor Anne’s legacy are her loving children: Richard Marino and his husband J.R. Springman of Washington, D.C.; Lorraine Marino Moore and Joseph Moore of Richmond, Virginia; and Sharon Marino Steen of Richmond, Virginia. Anne will be dearly missed by her brother John B. Cunning Jr. and his wife Carol Cunning of Fort Collins, Colorado. She will be forever cherished by her grandchildren and their families: Nicole and Juan Bustamante and their daughters Annabelle and Reina; Chip and Shawna Marino and their children Leo and Julia; Kyrie Dibling-Moore, Michael Fearnow and their daughter Heidi; and Samantha Moore, Joseph Utter and their daughter Emerald.
Anne was predeceased by her eldest daughter Kathleen, who was her guardian angel for more than 30 years, and whom we know is now peacefully reunited with her loving mother.
The family celebrated Anne’s life on Thursday, September 3, 2020 with a small memorial service at Saint Peter’s Catholic Church Cemetery in Waldorf, Maryland.
