Apolinar “Poly” Ventanilla Barbaza, passed away at his Waldorf, Maryland, home on September 7, 2025, at the age of 91. A devoted husband, loving father, and cherished grandfather, he is now reunited with his beloved wife, Bienvenida "Elsie" (Gacad) Barbaza, who preceded him in death on January 22, 2024.
Poly and Elsie shared a testament to unwavering devotion during their 65-year marriage. Their beautiful life, built on mutual respect and joy, set an inspiring example for all who knew them. Following Elsie's passing, Poly carried her memory with him always. While he missed her terribly, his unwavering spirit and deep love for his family saw him through, and he found comfort in the cherished memories they created together.
Born on June 18, 1934 in Pasay City, Philippines to Tirso T. Barbaza, Sr. and Epifania Ventanilla, Poly spent his early years in Pasay and San Pablo, Laguna. He was known for his dedication, kindness, and exceptional skills throughout his distinguished career as a Civil Engineer. With Elsie, he lived and worked in Vietnam for three years, and in 1971, they relocated to the U.S. He spent several years working at the Senate House before a fulfilling career of over 25 years with the Veterans Administration.
A man of quiet strength and humor, Poly was an avid traveler who visited all seven continents. His favorite pastime was ballroom dancing with Elsie. He also loved to fish. A devout Catholic, he enjoyed playing the guitar and ukulele in his youth and played mahjong throughout his life. After retiring, he found joy in playing Candy Crush until his passing.
