LaGretta and I grew up in Dunn, NC and attended the same high school.  After graduating from high school, we lost touch with each other.  I was now living in Brooklyn, New York.  Our paths didn’t cross again until May 1963, when we both gave birth to our children.  Neither of us knew this until we saw each other on the maternity ward of Kings County Hospital.  Where we looked at each other in surprise and said, “what are you doing here”.  Stephon and Cynthia were born a day apart.  From that point on our children knew each other as cousins and Aunt Peggy and Aunt LaGretta.
 
LaGretta lived an active life, playing cards, going shopping, cooking, bowling and sewing. She enjoyed traveling back to Dunn to see her sister.  We both loved to travel and went on many cruises visiting various islands.  LaGretta enjoyed attending gatherings with her family and friends.  Especially at her brother J.C and Marlene’s house. I will always cherish our friendship and the memories we created.

I am so deeply sorry for the loss of your mom. She was not only an amazing mother to you, but she was also like a mom to me, and I feel incredibly grateful to have known her and experienced her kindness, love, and warmth.

I will always remember the way she made people feel cared for and welcomed. Her love touched so many lives, and I know the impact she had on you and everyone around her will never be forgotten.

Please know that I am here for you through this difficult time. I’m holding you and your family in my thoughts and prayers, and I will always cherish the memories I have of your mom. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Oh, Aunt Legreta…

I guess I always thought you’d outlive us all. It’s hard to imagine this world without you in it.

Thank you for loving me so well over the years. What began as me simply being “Michael’s wife” grew into a friendship that I will always treasure. You made me feel like family, and that is a gift I’ll never take for granted.

I’ll never forget you driving through a rainstorm just to be at Amber’s wedding. That’s who you were—you showed up. And I smile every time I think about that famous potato salad you made for Nia’s graduation party. It was made with love, just like so many things you did.

I also think about your unwavering faith. You genuinely enjoyed going door to door as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, sharing what you believed with others. You never missed an opportunity to encourage me to check out the website and learn more. I always admired your conviction and your willingness to talk about what mattered most to you.

Were you perfect? Of course not. None of us are. You could be strong-willed, outspoken, and determined—but those qualities were part of what made you, you. I wouldn’t change a thing because they came wrapped in a heart that loved deeply.

To the rest of the world, you were Legreta. To your family, you may have been “Gret.” But to me, you’ll always be my Aunt Legreta—the aunt of my late husband, Michael, Cora’s baby boy, and a woman who became my friend in her own right.

I can almost hear your voice now, and I hope you’re already sharing stories, asking questions, and smiling in paradise.

Rest well, Aunt Legreta. Thank you for your friendship, your love, your faith, and the memories you’ve left behind. You will always hold a special place in my heart.
