Laverna Lee Smith

Laverna Lee Smith went home to be with the Lord on Monday, August 5,2024. She was born on June 10, 1953 in Harlan, Kentucky to the Late Nellie and Walter Smith. Laverna was one of ten children. She is survived by her sisters, Linda Smith and June Carolyn Mararacs; two nieces, Trina Allen (Adrian) and Crystal Walker (Adrian); two nephews, Larry Collier and Allen Patsel; two great nieces, Victoria and Trinity Allen, one great nephew, Gabriel Walker and a host of other relatives and friends.

Laverna lived with her sister Linda in their childhood home in Fort Washington, Maryland for 65 years. Laverna was born with cerebral palsy, but her parents ensured she lived her life being as self-sufficient as possible. She helped her mother to care for her brothers and sister and did chores to assist the family, such as cooking, cleaning and doing laundry, ect.

Laverna was employed at Peoples Security Bank which later became Sun Trust Bank. She was hired as a receptionist and worked her way up to Assistant Manager until she retired to help take care of her parents and brother who were ill.

Laverna loved the Lord and made a point of telling others about him in everyday life and through drama; drama was her passion. She always kept a notepad and pen by her bed at night to write down any ideas that the Lord would give her for the performances. Her greatest desire was that her family, friends, and everyone come to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

Laverna served the Lord in several capacities in ministry. She helped to clean the church, working in the church office, food pantry and clothes closet, greeting card ministry and Children Church Ministry as a teacher. Laverna never allowed her disability to stop her from serving the Lord.
