Ulyssees Eucline (“Louis” or “James”) Elcock passed away quietly on January 23, 2022 at his residence in Waldorf, Maryland. Ulyssees was 83 years old. He was born on October 9, 1938 in St. George, Barbados, West Indies, the sixth child of Clarence and Eileen (Inniss) Elcock.
Ulyssees emigrated to the United States in 1962. After several years, he settled in Bronx, New York, where he met Bonnylyn (“Evelyn”) Smiley, whom he married in 1966 and remained married for 55 years until his death. Ulyssees and Evelyn relocated to East Orange, New Jersey, in 1972 with their four children. A mason by trade, Ulyssees spent many years as a union laborer before establishing his own successful business as an independent general contractor. In business, he earned a broad reputation for quality workmanship on his mason and interior redesign projects. Ulyssees retired in 2000; he and his wife relocated to Waldorf around 2003 to live with his daughter and her family.
Throughout his life, Ulyssees maintained a firm belief in the value of a strong work ethic and Christian principles. These beliefs were apparent in the values he instilled while raising his children, during his recreation, and when sharing his perspectives on applying one’s God-given talents and enjoying the fruits of one’s labor. Ulyssees gained a reputation for being stern, big-hearted, and generous. He was family-oriented; he enjoyed spending time with his own family while maintaining connections with family and friends across the United States, as well as Canada, Barbados, and the United Kingdom.
Ulyssees is survived by his wife, Evelyn Elcock; sons, James, John, and David Elcock; daughter, Melissa Elcock-Brown; daughters-in-law, Robyn Elcock and Erica Wade Elcock; son-in-law, Michael Brown; grandchildren, Lewis, Amber, Brandon (BJ), Marcus, Matthew, Elias, Zoe, Isaiah, and McKenna; great-grandson, Jaden Elcock; siblings, Ondeane, David (Grantley), Thelma, Hugh (Bobby), Glyne, and Erene (Elcock) Hall; and a host of family and close friends across the United States, Canada, Barbados, and the United Kingdom.
