Veronika W. Bedient died on October 8, 2018 in Washington DC after a short illness. She was born on July 11, 1950 in Braunschweig, Germany. In 1956 she immigrated to Corning, New York with her family.
She joined the US Army in 1972 and was a member of the Women’s Army Corps (WAC)
She met her husband Robert W. Bedient in 1973 while stationed in Ft. Lewis, Washington and later married in 1974. They were stationed together in South Korea and many other places around the US. She received an Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal and two Good Conduct Medals.
They settled in Waldorf, MD in 1986 with their daughter Erika. Veronika worked as a substitute teacher in Charles County for nearly 30 years. She enjoyed teaching a variety of classes along with helping a variety of clubs and the theatre departments making costumes. She was very involved in her daughters’ schools in many areas including PTA President, Field Hockey Mom and Swim Team President and Meet Official.
Veronika was also involved in her community by serving as President of three Homeowners Associations and liaison with the Sheriff’s Department to help enforce safety in the community. In her free time, she enjoyed knitting, cross stitching, quilting, reading, traveling and attending baseball and hockey games.
Veronika was predeceased by her husband Robert Bedient after 37 years of marriage. She is also predeceased by her father Karl Westphal, her mother Waltraud Westphal and her brother Joachim Westphal. She is survived by her daughter Erika Bedient of Waldorf, MD and her sister Mary (Max) Yerkes of Corning, NY.
Arrangements for her inurnment are pending with Arlington National Cemetery.
