Much of this obituary comes from his words in writings he has left behind.
At the tender age of one year old, the Large family settled in Sioux City, IA. It was here that he received his education through the 9th grade. In 1930 due to stock market crash of 1929 and the resulting very hard times, he was sent to his Uncle Lew and Aunt Winnie Thomas’ farm at Litchfield, NE to help them farm. This was done so that he would not be an expense to his mother who was left with his sister and brother. His father, Harry Porter Large had been killed in a mining accident earlier.
In 1947, Harrison met and married his beautiful (his words) wife, Audrey, in Oklahoma City while stationed there as a medical technician with the Induction station. Audrey had two young daughters at the time of the marriage, and added to that family was their son, Chuck.
Harrison stated that the Japanese changed the course of his life when they bombed Pearl Harbor. His Army career started in 1942 when he was drafted. Initially, Harrison remained in the Army because his mother had passed away during his first year of service, and there was no home to go to. Harrison served his country for 26 years in the Army as a medical and laboratory technician.
In 1952 Harrison was deployed on assignment with a MASH Hospital in the Korean War and he was also deployed to France a few years later. Harrison retired from the Army in September, 1968.
After his retirement Harrison and Audrey settled in the Houston area when Harrison took a job with NASA. He continued to do medical and lab work with NASA and received a letter of commendation for his assistance with the Apollo II Mission.
After leaving NASA they moved to San Antonio for a few years, and then came back home to Oklahoma City. Harrison lost his beautiful wife in 2006. And in 2013 after surgery for a malignant tumor, his declining health required a move to Baptist Village of Oklahoma City where he resided until his death.
Harrison was predeceased by his parents, his siblings, wife, Audrey; stepdaughter, Lana Ingram; and great grandson, Anakin Martinez. Family members left to miss him are son, Charles Large (Jennifer) of Sarasota, FL; stepdaughter, Nita Biggs (Earl) of Piedmont, and son-in-law Stan Ingram of Yukon, OK. Also surviving Harrison are his grandchildren Shelley Braniff (Shirley), Natalie Jackson(Mark); Amanda Martinez (Andy); Jack Ingram; Tracey Young (Stu); Shane Biggs (Elizabeth); Stephanie Whittington (Grant); Christina Large; and 10 great grandchildren.
Harrison is a member of First Baptist Church, Piedmont, OK.
The family wishes to thank the Baptist Village of Oklahoma City for their 6 years of loving care and Physician’s Choice Hospice for their support and tender care of Harrison. To God be the glory!!!
