

Barney (Pane) Momcilovic, age 91 of Warren, died Friday, December 6, 2013 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born December 3, 1922 in Detroit, Michigan, son of the late Pane and Anna Momcilovic, and lived his entire 91 years serving his country, his community, and his family. During World War II, Barney joined the Army and became a member of the 101st Airborne Division, a Screaming Eagle, and jumped over Normandy on D-Day. He went on to rescue the men trapped at Bastogne, and was part of the liberation of several concentration camps during his tour of duty. With thanks and praise from a grateful nation, we honor Barney for his service to our country, and for the bravery and patriotism he showed by standing in harm's way on behalf for the cause of freedom and in preserving the liberties we enjoy today...because he was "Over There." He returned from the war to marry Catherine Rocanas on October 12, 1947. From 1951 to 1978, Barney served as a Detroit Firefighter. He fought fires during the riot of 1967, and later retired as a lieutenant. In his later years, Barney became an avid golfer, retiring to Warren, Michigan where he was very active with many clubs, including the Square Club, various veteran organizations, and was a member of the St. John's Greek Orthodox choir. Barney was known for being knowledgeable on many topics and starting conversations with anyone. He was quick with a joke, a helpful hint, or a good dose of encouragement. His wife of 65 years, Catherine, passed away on January 29, 2013. Barney is survived by his son, Michael Momcilovic; daughter, Mary (Charles) VanDerMaas; Granddaughter, Catherine (Kellen) Manley; several siblings; many nieces and nephews; and hundreds of friends. Visitation for Barney will be held on Sunday, December 8th 5-9pm and Monday from 2-9pm, with a 7pm Trisagion Service, at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 ½ Mile Rd) in Warren. Mr. Momcilovic will lie in state on Tuesday from 10:00am until time of the Funeral Service at 11:00am at St. John Greek Orthodox Church, 11455 Metropolitan Parkway, Sterling Heights, MI 48312.Please share memories of Barney at his memory book.
