Age 91, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2026. Bernard was born on October 6, 1934 in Hamtramck, Michigan, to the late Paul and Josephine (nee. Gibala) Wozniak. A proud lifelong part of the Hamtramck community, Bernie grew up alongside his siblings, the late Theresa Witkowski, the late Joan Romanowski, and the late John Wozniak. The four shared many childhood memories and all proudly graduated from Hamtramck High School.
Bernard was the beloved husband of the late Delphine (nee. Kordas), with whom he shared nearly 59 wonderful years of marriage before her passing on April 29, 2016. Together, Bernie and Delphine built a beautiful life centered around family, love, faith, and countless cherished memories. They were devoted parents to Annette (Robert) Pocica, Carolyn (John) Tatge, Michelle (Richard) Guzzo, and the late Brian Wozniak. Their family continued to grow through their beloved grandchildren, Ryan Wozniak, Nicholas Guzzo, Emily (Dugan) Darnell, Madeline Guzzo, and Audrey Tatge, who brought them great joy and pride.
Bernie will be remembered for his kind and steady nature, his love of family, and the many simple pleasures that made life meaningful to him. He enjoyed wood carving, golfing, skiing, and fishing, always finding time to appreciate the outdoors. One of his favorite places was the family cottage on Higgins Lake, Michigan, where he and Delphine created many treasured memories and where he enjoyed spending time surrounded by family and the beauty of the lake.
If you needed Bernie, you looked in the garage first. That is where you found him - sleeves rolled, sawdust on his shoes - fixing a lawnmower, building a step stool, or turning a scrap of lumber into something that would last. When St. Sylvester's Church needed a Christmas manger, he built it. When the nuns needed a custom table for a small television, he had it made and stained in a matter of days. He was a master woodcarver. His birds and ducks won awards, but he seemed just as proud of the useful things that quietly found their way into peoples homes. Bernie loved ice fishing on Lake St. Clair. He built his own fish shanty and a slick cart to tow it onto the ice. The happiest part of the day was never the catch itself, it was giving the fish away. He is remembered for hands that could make almost anything, and for a generosity that never needed an audience and he still believed a phone call costs a nickel.
Bernard’s faith was an important part of his life. He was a longtime usher at St. Sylvester Catholic Church in Warren, Michigan, where he faithfully served his parish community for many years. His faith, devotion to family, and commitment to those around him were qualities that remained a meaningful part of who he was throughout his life.
Bernie leaves behind a loving family and many dear friends who will forever cherish the memories they shared with him. His life was one of love, faith, family, and devotion, and his memory will continue to live on in all those who were blessed to know him.
A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date. Please continue to keep Bernie’s family in your thoughts and prayers, and check back for additional service information.
