

Bernardine "Bernie" Legumina, age 74 and longtime resident of Sterling Heights, Michigan, died January 24, 2015 at St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital, Macomb Center in Warren.Bernie was born March 5, 1940 in Detroit, Michigan, daughter of the late Jacob Nowak and the late Genevieve (nee: Marlinga) Nowak. Bernie was raised in Detroit and graduated from the Patronage of St. Joseph Catholic High School, Class of 1957.Following high school, Bernie went to work in the banking industry and was employed with Detroit Bank & Trust where she worked as a teller, clerk, and reconciler. As time passed, Bernie met the love of her life, Alfred and the two were joined in Holy Matrimony on June 24, 1961 at St. Albertus Catholic Church in Detroit.The young Legumina family eventually settled in Sterling Heights, Michigan where the couple would raise three beautiful daughters. Mrs. Legumina was very active in her daughters upbringing. She always volunteered to be a chaperone for the field trips, as well as making sure everyone was fed.Bernie loved tending to her family. She cooked wonderful meals, tended to her home, and always made sure her flowers looked beautiful. She was a woman who put others before herself. She unselfishly volunteered and gave to other's. She was a founding member of the St. Rene Woman's Club and always supported the needy in many different ways.Fun times were also a big part of Bernie's life, whether she was playing a practical joke or telling a funny story, Bernie always had a smile on her face. She loved to travel with her husband and the two visited Japan, Hawaii, and Alaska, in addition to taking their many camping trips. Some of the trips even included visiting the casino where Bernie was somewhat of a "One Armed Bandit" on the Slot Machines.Bernardine Legumina was the beloved wife for over 53 years to Alfred, and dear mother of Brenda Legumina, Colleen (Michael) Weaver, and the late Alicia. Bernie was the cherished sister of Lorraine (Jerry) Beauchemin. Visitation for Mrs. Legumina will be held Thursday, January 29th from 3-9pm, with a 7pm Rosary by the St. Rene Woman's Club at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Rd. at Common (12 1/2 mile) in Warren. Mrs. Legumina will lie in state on Friday, 9am at St. Rene Goupil Catholic Church, 35955 Ryan Rd in Sterling Heights, until the time of the Funeral Mass at 9:30am.
