Catherine E. Funke passed away peacefully on October 19, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family, just one day shy of her 88th birthday. She was born on October 20, 1938, in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, and lived a life defined by love, kindness, faith, and devotion to her family.
Catherine was the beloved wife of the late Lawrence Funke, who preceded her in death on October 4, 2006. Together, they built their life in Roseville, Michigan, where Catherine continued to reside. She was the loving mother of Mary (Al) Heffner and the proud Gram of Emily, who held a very special place in her heart. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews who will cherish her memory.
In her twenties, Catherine moved from Pennsylvania to Michigan, where she stayed with her sister while getting established and building a life of her own. She attended college and spent some time working as a schoolteacher. Later, while working at a drug store, she met Lawrence, a regular customer who would become her husband. Their meeting marked the beginning of a lasting love and a life together.
Throughout her life, Catherine held a variety of jobs that reflected her many interests and talents. She worked at a bingo hall, where she enjoyed being part of an activity she loved, and spent time at Stahl's factory in Eastpointe, planning layouts for clothing printing and embroidery. No matter where she worked, Catherine brought dedication and care to what she did.
Her Catholic faith was an important part of her life. Catherine was a longtime member of Our Lady Queen of All Saints Catholic Church until its closure, after which she joined St. Faustina Catholic Church, where she remained a faithful parishioner. She generously volunteered her time at church, assisting in the sacristy and helping with counting the offerings given at Sunday Mass. Her willingness to serve others was another reflection of her kind and giving nature.
Of all the roles Catherine held throughout her life, her favorite was being Gram to Emily. She treasured the time they spent together, especially teaching Emily and helping her with schoolwork. These moments were a source of great joy and pride for Catherine, and the love she shared with her granddaughter will remain a lasting part of Emily's memories.
Catherine's family describes her in two simple but meaningful words: loving and kind-hearted. She had a special way of showing her love through the time she gave, the help she offered, and the care she extended to those around her. Her presence will be deeply missed, but the memories she created and the love she shared will live on in the hearts of her family.
Catherine was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lawrence, and her siblings and their spouses: Mary (John) Gonglik, Elizabeth (John) Churray, Cecilia (Alfred) Lipinski, Agnes (Frank) Murphy, Vincent (Helen) Simko, Andrew (Mary) Simko, and Dolores (Edgar) Cheverine, and her infant son, Michael, who sadly passed at birth.
Catherine's life was a testament to the enduring power of family, faith, and kindness. Though she passed away just one day before her 88th birthday, she leaves behind a lifetime of cherished memories and a legacy of love that will never be forgotten.
