Cynthia Lynn Van Elslander, age 71, passed away peacefully at her home on June 14, 2026, in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. She was born on February 6, 1955, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Nicholas and the late Mary Jane (née Reschke) Baublin. She was raised in Detroit and graduated from Denby High School in 1973 where she was captain of the cheerleading squad and was known for her outgoing personality and ability to make friends wherever she went. She continued her education at Central Michigan University. In her twenties, she became a successful business owner of a food brokerage company.
Although she wore many hats throughout her life, the role she cherished most was that of mother to her two children, K.C. and Stephen. She poured her heart and soul into caring for Stephen, and her love and dedication to both of her children knew no bounds.
Cindy found great joy in horseback riding and driving her vintage stick-shift convertibles. She was an exceptional seamstress who displayed her artistic talent through the elaborate Halloween costumes she created. She had a playful spirit and was known for being silly, fun-loving, thoughtful and caring. Her kindness drew people to her, and she developed many lasting friendships throughout her life. Even during her hospital stays, friends would often gather around her bedside, filling the room with love, laughter, and support.
Seventeen years ago, Cindy was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and breast cancer. Throughout her lengthy battle, she faced every challenge with remarkable determination, strength, and grace. She was truly a warrior, inspiring those around her through her resilience and unwavering spirit.
She is survived by her children Katherine C. “K.C.” Van Elslander and Stephen Van Elslander, their father Gary Van Elslander, her partner Steven Plague, sisters Diane (Lloyd) Simpson and Nancy (Jerry Thomas) Riegler. She is also survived by many loving stepchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
A Memorial Service will be held at Historic Trinity Lutheran Church in Detroit at 1345 Gratiot Ave, July 11, 2026. Visitation at 10 a.m. and service at 11 a.m. Arrangements have been entrusted to D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home.
