Delphine M. Grillo, age 78 of Sterling Heights, died Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital, Macomb Center surrounded by her loving family. She was born on April 27, 1935 in Detroit, daughter of the late George and the late Celia (nee: Sliwinski) Hallman. At times like these, it's not just absence and loss that fills our souls,…but also the many fond and happy memories of our loved one that sets them apart. And for Delphine's family, one of the most precious of those was the absolute love she held for them, and how much that she was truly the "heart of the family." Family gatherings were always made that much brighter through her presence, and she poured the best part of herself into each and every moment she was given to share with them. Her children also commented on what a great listener she was and all their Mom did to help them in life. But her love and care wasn't contained merely within the walls of family. For those kids who grew up in her neighborhood, they were also the blessed benefactors of her love and compassion. Each neighborhood seems to have that one special "Mom" that reaches out to all the kids and welcomes them with open arms,…and Delphine was that Mom. With 6 children of her own, her house was always a haven of comfort and joy with the sounds of children at play,…and she would have had it no other way!And the massive love she possessed wasn't reserved merely for us humans, but also for her furry, four-legged friends and loved ones. She was a devout pet owner of many throughout the years, namely; Samantha, Buddy, Teka, and Khaleesi. In her younger years, some of Delphine's most treasured memories were those spent with her beloved Bart on their trips to Canada. Most often, it was to Hamilton, Ontario where they would meet up with Anna & Bill for a rousing game of cards. Some of the best times and conversations were those shared around the table while the cards were being slung,..and memories were being created. And like most mother's, Delphine was truly a hit in the kitchen. If you left her table hungry, it was your fault. She could whip up some culinary magic that would have your eyes rolling back in your head,…like her ever-tasty Breaded Steak, or those delicious Pigs-in-a-Blanket. And when dessert came-a-callin', two of Delphine's finest treats were her Lemon Meringe and Coconut Cream Pies. Mmmm good!!! Yet, perhaps most memorable will forever be her Strawberry Jello, a fruity & jiggly delight that was always a hit,…especially during the holidays.A loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Delphine leaves behind a legacy of love that will keep her close always. The lives she touched along the way were many, yet she had a way of making you feel like you were the most special one in the world. Her presence was as warm and refreshing as the sun, perhaps because her life was devoted to the Son,…in whose arms she now rests. She will be missed immensely and loved eternally. Delphine was the beloved wife of the late Bart. Dear mother of JoAnn (George) May, Kathleen (David) Durkee, Andrew (Lydia) Grillo, George Grillo, Cindy (Darren) Grillo, and Patty Grillo. Loving grandmother of John Durkee and Christopher May. Sister of Geraldine (Robert) Cole, and sister-in-law of Anthony (Doris) Grillo and the late Anna (Harry) Parrino.A Memorial Visitation for Delphine will be held on Tuesday, December 10th from 9:30am until the time of her Memorial Mass at 10:00am at St. Thecla Catholic Church in Clinton Township, Michigan.
