Donald Joseph McCoy, age 85, died Monday, May 18, 2020 at Ascension Macomb Hospital in Warren, Michigan. Donald was born on Christmas Day, December 25, 1934 in Evansville, Indiana, son of the late Clarence and Evelyn McCoy.
Donald was raised in Evansville and graduated from Reitz Memorial High School in 1952 where he excelled in his studies, and at football. Following high school, Donald studied to be a Holy Cross Brother at Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. During his time of discernment, he realized his vocation was not to be with the brothers, but as a lay person within the church. As only a mother can care, it was on a visit back home a few years later that Donald's mother suggested he make contact with a former classmate from high school. Perhaps by chance, or maybe the grace of God,...but it was that meeting that sparked the flame of what would become a loving and life-long relationship, shared together as husband & wife. In celebration of their love and commitment to each other, the family joined together, last June, in hosting a 60th wedding anniversary party that was an immensely memorable occasion and fitting tribute for Donald and his bride.
Donald married Erma Louise Titzer on June 6, 1959 in Evansville and following the marriage continued his studies at Indiana University. He would go on to attain his Bachelor's Degree, a Master's Degree, and lastly his Ed.S Degree (Educational Specialist Degree).
Donald and Erma eventually migrated North to Michigan where Donald took a position with Southfield High School. He later was offered a position working for Macomb Community College in Warren, Michigan. At both the high school and the college, Donald's career found him wearing two hats,...both as teacher and couselor where he found great reward in mentoring the many students that passed through his life. Donald was extremely proud of the 35 years of dedicated service he extended while on staff at the college, and cherished each memory and moment of helping to mold and change young lives.
Away from his work duties, Donald and his wife were constant caregivers to their son, Michael who was born with Cerebral Palsy. The couple made sure Michael could enjoy as normal a life as possible, even though he never walked. The care provided him a life up until the age of 50. Donald also had a passion for singing, socializing, and having a good time with his many friends and family members. Fun times seemed to be enjoyed at the McCoy home, and Donald & Erma made sure to travel annually to many different locales. Over the years, Donald was involved with choral singing groups and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Elks in Troy, Michigan.
Throughout his entire life, Donald remained devout in his Catholic faith and was a lifetime member of the Fr. Kramer Knights of Columbus Council, and an active parishioner of St. Clement Catholic Church. Over the years, with his many accomplishments both professionally and through his benevolent memberships, Donald was most proud of his family and grandchildren.
Donald Joseph McCoy was the beloved husband of Erma McCoy, and dearest father of Tammy (David) Kruse, Donna (Matthew) Bednarczyk, and the late Michael J. McCoy. Loving grandfather of Luke (Morgan), Philip, and Danny.
Donald will lie in state on Saturday, May 30th from 9:30 am until time of the Funeral Mass at 11:00 am at St. Mary, Our Lady Queen of Families Catholic Church - St. Clement Site in Center Line, Michigan. Entombment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Township, Michigan.
Further funeral arrangements will be forthcoming following the guidance of the Governor's office with respect to the COVID virus.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are appreciated to the family.
