Dorothy was raised on the Groesbeck farm in Warren Township, long before it became the City of Warren. Little did she know that just down the road in the city of Center Line lived the young man who would one day become her husband. After graduating from St. Clement’s High School in 1953, Dorothy began working at St. Clement Catholic Church, where she served as an organist and helped care for the rectory by cooking and cleaning for the priest.
On April 12, 1958, Dorothy married the “boy down the street,” Benjamin J. Moon, at St. Clement Catholic Church in Center Line. Together, they made their home on Coolidge Street in Center Line before moving to Warren in 1964, where they began attending St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church. Dorothy’s faith remained an important part of her life, and she went on to teach Christian education and serve as an organist at St. Martin de Porres and other churches throughout the area.
Dorothy found happiness in the simple pleasures of life. She loved tending to her vegetable garden and flowers, and she never minded pulling a few weeds along the way. She enjoyed listening to the birds chirp, watching children play, and taking in the peace and beauty of the outdoors. Dorothy and Ben loved opening their home to family and friends, and she took great pleasure in cooking and baking for those she loved. At home, it was not unusual to hear Dorothy playing the piano or organ, filling the house with music. She especially loved her memories of life on the farm the most, spending time with her dad whom she adored.
Known for her quick wit and sharp mind, Dorothy was often a step ahead of everyone else. She loved telling stories to anyone willing to listen and had a deep appreciation for ancestry and history. Looking through old photographs of relatives brought her tremendous joy, as she cherished the connections between generations and the stories that made up her family’s history.
Above all, Dorothy was a woman who touched countless lives with her warmth, humor, intelligence, and kindness. She was deeply loved by all who knew her, and her legacy will live on through the many family members and friends whose lives she enriched.
Dorothy was the beloved wife of the late Benjamin. She was the loving mother of Julie (Jim) Lynn, Jeff (Peggy) Moon, David (Jennifer) Moon, Cathy Peck, and Nancy (Jereme) Poxson; devoted grandmother of 20 grandchildren; and loving great-grandmother of 30 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her siblings, Robert Groesbeck, Shirley Kraemer, Ethel Birko, and Donald Groesbeck. She is also survived by many other loving family members and dear friends who will cherish her memory.
