Douglas N. Lane, age 74 of Warren, died Friday, March 4, 2011 at St. Mary's Nursing Home in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. He was born on November 29, 1936 in Detroit, the son of the late Arval and the late Tina (nee: Tolliver) Lane. With thanks & praise from a grateful nation, we pay homage to Douglas for his service to our country, and the sacrifices made, in helping to maintain the freedoms & liberties we enjoy today. As part of the United States Army, he served briefly overseas and was honorably discharged in April of 1966. In 1959, Douglas' path in life took a wonderful turn when he met Carol, the woman who would go on to provide him the blessings of a loving wife, mother and grandmother. After promising their vows on July 28, 1962 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, they went on to share over 48 years together building a home, raising a family, and enjoying the simple joys of life. For over 45 years, Douglas had just one employer, the Ford Motor Company, with whom he extended the utmost in dedicated service. Beginning on the assembly line, and ultimately landing as manager of the tool crib, he exuded the optimum in loyalty and work ethics until his retirement in 2003. When Douglas wasn't working, there were a number of pastimes and favorite things he enjoyed. Whether it was trying his luck at the casino, pushing his luck over a rousing game of cards, or getting lucky with a "steal" at the local flea markets,...it sure wasn't hard for Douglas to have a good time. When it came to sports, there was no greater fan of the boys in the winged wheel than Doug. His Red Wings stirred that competitive blood inside, and his son recalls how he and Dad would cop-a-squat together, down on the floor in front of the TV, watching their Cup Champions work their magic. Yet, as personal interests go, perhaps his favorite escape came from his love of music,...with which he possessed quite an eclectic taste. From Big Band to the Beastie Boys, Douglas' appreciation for all things music had few boundaries, and produced hours of enjoyment. As for pleasing his belly, his favorite staples were definitely his love of Pepsi and chinese cuisine. I wonder if chopsticks were involved? Yet of all the things that Douglas will be remembered for, first & foremost, will be his infectious & engaging sense of humor. Always the jokester and eager to make people laugh, you could count on Doug to bring a little frivolity and lightheartedness into your day. And as much as he was the funny guy, he was equally renowned for being a social butterfly as well. The nursing home will never be the same in the absence of Doug carousing through the hallways in his wheelchair stirring things up and enjoying the company of friends. Without question, Douglas was the consummate "people person" who found great delight in the human dynamic and experience. And, of course, the people who brought him the most joy were his family and friends. He enjoyed spending every moment possible with them and managed to build a storehouse of treasured memories. The lives he touched were many and the legacy of love he leaves behind will forever keep him close at heart. He will be missed immensely. He was the beloved husband of Carol (nee: Roby). Dear father of Douglas (Lisa) Lane, Jacqueline (Wayne) Stribling, Deborah Deitman, and Valarie (Amanpreet) Singh. Loving grandfather of Jessica, Megan, Carly, Lorne, Melissa, Samantha, Kayla, Zachary, and the late Danielle. Great-grandfather of Brandon, Katelyn, and Tarynn. Brother of Donna Mortier and Richard (Dallas) Lane. He was predeceased by siblings; Marvin, Howard, Robert, Mary Lou, and Doris. Son-in-law of Veronica Roby, and brother-in-law of Jeanette (Kenneth) Klann. Visitation for Douglas will be held on Monday, March 7th from 3-8pm at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 1/2 Mile Rd) in Warren. His Funeral Service will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday at the funeral home. Officiating will be Pastor Bill Lawrence. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Township, Michigan. Memorial donations are welcomed to the Alzheimer's Association - Greater Michigan Chapter, 20300 Civic Center Drive, Suite 100, Southfield, MI 48076-4166. Please share memories of Douglas at his guest book.
