Edward “Corky” Gutenschwager, age 89 of Warren, died peacefully at home on Saturday, May 9, 2020. He was born July 13, 1930 in Detroit, son of the late Walter and the late Lucille (nee: Erickson) Gutenschwager.
Edward was born and raised in Detroit and was known as “Corky” to his friends and family. He worked a variety of jobs during his life, but was probably best known as a carpenter and cabinet maker. Even after he retired, he put his talents to work building things for the grandchildren he loved – step stools, a playhouse, wagons, and a cradle. He enjoyed bowling, ice skating, swimming, and was a lifelong Red Wings fan. He was married to his wife, Lois, for 69 years, and after the kids left home, they enjoyed cruising and spending time at the casino. Corky was so proud of his first Atlantic City casino jackpot that he carried his bucket of quarters on the airplane back to Detroit. He was always happy to spend time at his cottage in Port Hope,...and he never met a cookie that he didn’t like.
Corky was the beloved husband of Lois (Caluwe). Loving father of Marianne (Rick), Judy (Bob), Leslie (the late Gary), and Timothy (Kimberly). Grandpa Corky to Matt (Ashley), Dan (Lauryn), Ben (Rachel), Joe, Kevin, and Julie. Soon to be great-grandfather of one. Dear brother-in-law of Suzanne (the late John) Greenlee. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Lucille, his brother Wally, and his two lifelong friends, Don Evens and John Veith. He also leaves behind five nephews and one niece.
Memorial donations, in Corky's memory, are welcome to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105, or at www.stjude.org
Arrangements have been entrusted to the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 1/2 Mile Rd.) in Warren, Michigan.
