Ellen “Sally” Louise Benton, age 89, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 20, 2024 in the comfort of her home. She was born on July 22, 1934, in Baraga, Michigan, to parents John Francis Reed and Ella Geneva (Wallin) Reed.
Ellen's heart belonged to her expansive family, a source of boundless joy and cherished memories. As a beloved Nana, she found immense fulfillment in spending time with her grandchildren, filling their lives with warmth and wisdom. Whether sharing stories or always responding with “love you more,” Ellen's presence was a beacon of love and comfort for her family. Her greatest happiness came from the laughter and love she shared with them, which helped create a legacy of closeness and unforgettable moments that will endure through the years to come.
Ellen was a dedicated member of the Sweet Adelines International with the Great Lakes Chorus for sixty-two years, where she sang tenor. Her talent and passion for music led her to compete with the Great Lakes Chorus regionally, nationally, and internationally, where they won several competitions. Her love and dedication to barbershop harmony was honored by her being awarded as a lifetime member of the Sweet Adelines International. In addition, Ellen shared her beautiful voice as a part of her church choir, enriching the worship experience for her fellow church members.
Beyond her musical contributions, Ellen was an avid crocheter, creating beautiful pieces with love and skill. Crochet was something that allowed Ellen to bond with her grandchildren and create memories that will last a lifetime. She also had a passion for traveling and camping, especially in the serene and picturesque Upper Peninsula. Traveling back to the U.P. allowed her to revisit childhood memories and take comfort in knowing that no matter her location, she always had a place to call home if family was near. In her leisure time, she enjoyed watching the Hallmark Channel, finding joy in its heartwarming stories.
Ellen’s love for music, her creativity, and her kind spirit touched many lives. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of harmony, warmth, and kindness will remain in our hearts forever.
