Florence E. McVety, 92, of Sterling Heights, Michigan, passed away on October 17, 2026. Born on July 31, 1934, she later joined the family of foster parents Pastor Howard and Thelma Woodard. Florence will be remembered as a cherished presence in the lives of those who knew and loved her—steady in faith, gentle in spirit, and wise in the quiet ways that shaped a family, built community, and created a lasting legacy.
Florence graduated from Cass City High School, carrying forward a strong work ethic and a thoughtful, grounded approach to life that remained with her through the years.
She found deep purpose in her role as a pastor’s wife, serving with faithful devotion and a generous spirit to all she encountered. Florence later worked at a small neighborhood manufacturer, and later brought her exceptional baking skills to managing a successful local bakery.
Florence married the love of her life, Bruce F. McVety, and together they shared 55 years of marriage before Bruce passed away in 2008. She was the loving mother of two daughters, DeeDee McVety and Cindy Kaye. Florence was the cherished grandmother of Brandon (Elizabeth) Horian, Nathan (Dana) Horian, and Shannon (Anthony) Rodick, and the great-grandmother of Travis Horian, Jane Horian, Jack Horian, Eleanor Horian, Camden Horian, Mason Horian, Austin Rodick, and Azyn Rodick. She was a dear foster sister to Mary Helen Pratt.
Florence was preceded in death by her foster parents Pastor Howard and Thelma Woodard, and by two foster sisters and spouses, Wanda and Jim Lonsberry, and Wanetta and Keith Little, and Arthur Pratt - husband of Mary Helen.
A faithful volunteer wherever she was needed, Florence gave her time with skill and humility that put people at ease and helped them feel valued. She enjoyed sewing, making cherished personalized greeting cards, and she had a special fondness for animals—especially dogs. Above all, she loved her family, and her warmth, steady guidance, and kind-hearted spirit will be deeply missed.
