She attended Dearborn High School. While she was in High School, she did some high fashion modeling. Helen earned a bachelor’s degree at Michigan State. Later she earned a Master’s in education from Oakland University.
Her career began at WWJ-TV in Detroit. Later she became reading consultant in the Van Dyke public school district in Warren and then spent twenty years as the beloved Principal at Thompson Elementary School. She loved her job at Thompson and felt very close to the students and their families. She attended every event at the school and baked cupcakes for birthdays.
She was in a long-term relationship with Tim Wheaton who predeceased her. She is survived by her brother Sandy MacGregor and his wife, Marilyn, her stepson and daughter-in-law Tony and Shana Wheaton, half-sister Carol Kent and half-brother Bill Johnston.
Helen was a great animal lover. If you’re interested in donating in her name to the ASPCA of Michigan, her furry friends would appreciate it. Or you may honor her by donating to the Foundation for Educational Excellence at 23500 Mac Arthur Blvd. Warren, MI 48089.
A memorial will be held later.
