Herbert was born in London, England where he attended school up until the 8th grade. After surviving the London Blitz from 1940 – 1941, Herbert honorably served his country during World War II by enlisting in the British Royal Navy. In his mid-twenties after the war, he emigrated by himself from London to Canada where he worked at logging and mining camps. Herbert then decided to move to the United States in 1956 for greater employment opportunities. After working at job shops for a few years, he hired at Chrysler Corporation in 1965 as a millwright and retired 29 years later in 1994. Herbert became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1982.
The year 1983 was the year Herbert became the loving, faithful companion of Donna. Herbert and Donna spent over 40 years together and enjoyed traveling the world side by side. Herbert loved adventure and the great outdoors. He also wanted to help others experience and explore the world through the American Youth Hostels, an organization with the mission to help all gain a greater understanding of the world and its people through hosteling.
Herbert was a competitive motorcyclist while in England. Here in Michigan, he was an avid bicyclist, backpacker, cross-country skier, and most importantly a pilot. He was a member of the Eximious Flying Club at Detroit City Airport for many years. He was also an active lieutenant in the Civil Air Patrol initially also at Detroit City Airport and later at Selfridge Air Base.
Family meant the world to Herbert. He loved being a father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He continued to travel to Australia every 3 years to visit his sister and her children. Herbert will forever be remembered for his adventurous spirit, giving nature, and love of flying. He had an infectious smile. A life well lived, Herbert will be missed immensely and loved eternally by his family and friends.
Herbert was the beloved longtime companion of Donna Kraft. Loving father of Nina Roessler and Julie Aukett. Cherished grandfather of Daniel (Jessica Bitel) Roessler, Emily (Matt) Phelps, and Savannah Barnes. Adored great-grandfather of Aidan, Dillon, Carter, and one more grandbaby on the way. Dear brother of the late Jessie Marshall. Proud uncle of Susan Young and Robert Marshall.
