Herbert G. Haynie Sr. age 81, died Monday, October 17, 2016 at the Autumn Woods Health Care Facility in Warren. Mr. Haynie was born January 30, 1935 in Detroit to the late Paul H. and the late Maxine Haynie (nee Adams).Herb spent the early years of his life living in the Metro Detroit area. Herb relocated a couple of times, but eventually found his way back to the Detroit area. One day Herb and one of his friends were driving down Gratiot Avenue only to come upon a group of young ladies hitchhiking, looking for a ride to Roseville. Herb and his friend did what any young men would do and they offered the group a ride to their destination. One of the members of this group was Geraldine May Richiert. This chance encounter would grow into a relationship that included 62 years of marriage and six children. Herbert and Geraldine shared their vows on May 29, 1954 at Grace Lutheran Church in Detroit.Mr. Haynie worked in the sheet metal industry, he was truly a master of his trade. Herb was one of those guys that could build or fix anything. His set of skills made it easy for him to perform countless "side jobs" through the years. He would ultimately open up his own business called Herb & Son, where he worked alongside his son, Herbert Jr.Mr. Haynie was an avid outdoorsman, he would often travel to Canada to hunt one of his favorite prey, the Moose. He also spent many Michigan falls up north in Lake City hunting for deer. Herb did not confine his passion of the outdoors to just land, he also enjoyed time on the water fishing or smelt dipping. He was a member of the VanMaele Rod & Gun Club for many years. For many years Herbert and a group of friends would partake in the spring time holiday of Tigers opening day. He and the group attended every opening day until Herb's health would no longer allow him to do so. Herb also had another special group of friends that he spent countless hours with, the gang at O'Hara's Pub on 10 mile Road. To Herb, this place was like "Cheers",...he would obtain much of his side work from the connections he made there. Unfortunately, most of the profits from this work would often get reinvested to O'Hara's Pub. Spending time at O'Hara's gave Herb the opportunity to perfect his craft of joke telling. He possessed an extreme wit that, at times, came out of nowhere.Herb was also a man who would give of his time. He was a regular donor of his blood to the American Red Cross; worked the Good Fellows paper drive for many years, and donated time at the Salvation Army. He was also quite involved in many fraternal organizations; as a member of the Mt. Clemens Masonic Lodge, the Moose Lodge in St. Clair Shores, the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Lake City, and an American Legion Post in Florida.Herbert's life revolved around being with other people, lots of other people. He loved to entertain at his home and would often host a fish fry, and everyone looked forward to his annual breakfast. Another of Herb's passions was bottling his own wine, something he enjoyed doing for many years. But perhaps the best part of making the wine, for Herb, was in enjoying its fine bouquet. Herb leaves to treasure his memory his wife of 62 years, Geraldine; His six children: Michael (Diane) Haynie, Laura (Charles) Randolph, Mark (The late Elizabeth) Haynie, Herbert G. (The late Virginia) Haynie Jr., Kevin (The late Renee) Haynie and Douglas (Rhonda) Haynie; one sister Cathy Lineburger and 15 Grandchildren and 11 Great Grandchildren. A memorial service and gathering will be announced at a later date. Please share memories at Mr. Haynie's memory book above.
