

Herman Joseph Mestl, age 94 and longtime resident of Warren, died Friday, November 27, 2015 at the MediLodge in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Herman was born June 14, 1921 in Colfax County, Nebraska, son of the late Herman Rudolph Mestl and the late Mary (nee: Semerad) Mestl.Herman was raised in Nebraska and later served in the United States Army during World War II. Upon his return from serving our country, Herman enrolled at the University of Nebraska, in Lincoln, where he majored in Mechanical Engineering. In 1954, Herman decided to leave Nebraska for the Motor City - Detroit, Michigan, where he entered Chrysler Graduate School of Engineering Research. Herman later received his Master's Degree from this esteemed program.Herman worked for over 25 years with Chrysler Motors in Highland Park as a Mechanical Engineer within the import/export division. Herman later transitioned from Chrysler to TACOM in Warren, from where he eventually retired in 1986. Never a person to sit still or be away from the car business, Herman worked as a contractor for Chrysler for two more years following his retirement. Again, after finally retiring, Herman continued employment with Greenfield Village, currently known as The Henry Ford Museum. Herman worked on the Firestone Farm giving tours as a character persona.Herman was truly a "car" man...a person who loved the intricacies of the automobile's mechanisms. Even as a young boy on the family farm in Nebraska, Herman's interests were beginning to shine when he penciled a drawing of an early automobile. His fascination with cars began very early on and never waned his entire life. Along with his passion for cars, Herman was also known for being quite the voracious reader, as well as a spiritual man steeped in his faith.Herman J. Mestl was the beloved husband of the late Rita D. Mestl, and is the dear father of Steve Mestl and Keith Mestl. He was also the cherished brother of Marie (Ed) Uher, and uncle of Mary Kay (Richard) Arkfeld, Sheri Uher, and the late Connie Uher. Visitation for Mr. Mestl will be held Friday, December 4th from 5-9 pm, with a 7 pm Rosary Service, at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 ½ Mile Rd). He will lie in state on Saturday from 9:00 am until time of the Funeral Mass at 9:30 am at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church in Warren. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Township, Michigan. Please share memories of Herman at his memory book above.
