Homer John Hunt

Homer John Hunt, age 90, died Monday, March 27, 2017 at St. John Macomb Hospital in Warren, Michigan. Homer was born March 10, 1927 in Amherstburg, Canada, son of the late Henry Clay Hunt and the late Elsie (nee: Warren) Hunt.Homer was raised in Amherstburg and graduated from Amherstburg's one room school building. During his youth, Homer worked on Bob-Lo Island. Homer loved his summers working for the amusement park and the many people he met. Following his schooling, Homer gained his U.S. citizenship by entering the United States Navy in April of 1945. Homer would transition through the Great Lakes, Illinois Naval Base on to San Bruno, California serving aboard the USS Alabama. He received his honorable discharge from the Navy on July 12, 1946, being awarded the Victory Medal and the American Area Campaign Medal during World War II.Homer returned home settling in Detroit just across the river from his hometown of Amerstburg. Homer met the love of his life, another Canadian, and the two joined in Holy Matrimony on October 9, 1948 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in LaSalle, Ontario, Canada. Shortly after their marriage, the newlyweds moved from their home on Eastlawn Street in Detroit to the new and burgeoning community of Warren, Michigan. It was in Warren where the couple raised a family, established their roots in the community, and also in their local Catholic Church. Homer was devout in his Catholic faith and was an active parishioner of St. Sylvester Catholic Church. Following his military service, Homer first worked for the Briggs Corporation in Detroit which later was absorbed by Chrysler Motors. He worked for over 35 years at Chrysler before retiring as a Superintendant of shipping and receiving. When Homer was not working, he was passionate about the game of golf and enjoyed taking the annual Chrysler Management golf trips. He taught his sons the game of golf along with how to bet skins, even though his sons never seemed to win a skin from their dad. Closer to home, Homer would meticulously tend to his lawn and even tend to his neighbor's lawns. He took great pride in the appearance of his home. Homer was also known for being extremely quick witted... returning humorous zingers before anyone could even respond.Homer was the beloved husband to the late Eileen for 68 years, and was the dearest father of Kirk (Joanne) Hunt, Sheila Vogdes, Annemarie (Fred) Gibson, Allen (Janice) Hunt, Keith (Kathy) Hunt, John (Echo) Hunt, and Celeste (Werner) Schneider. He was the loving grandfather of Alyssa, Abby, Grant, Ryan, Ashley, Lauren, Gabrielle, Garrett, Jordyn, Autumn, Amanda, Kyle, Blaine, Cameron, Katie, Claey, Aaron, Alex, and Great-grandfather of Ethan. He was the brother of Vera "Kate" (Larry) McBride and the late Howard Hunt and the late Ruth Bondy.Visitation for Mr. Hunt will be held Friday, March 31st from 3-9pm, with an Evening Vigil Service at 6:30 pm, at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 1/2 Mile Road) in Warren. Mr. Hunt will lie in state on Saturday from 12 pm Noon until time of the Funeral Mass at 12:3 pm at St. Faustina Catholic Church, 14025 E. 12 Mile Road in Warren.
