Passed away on June 18, 2026 at the age of 85. Born on October 28, 1940 in Detroit, Michigan, James was the beloved son of the late Edward C. Potter and Mary Potter (née Simon). He was raised in Detroit alongside his brothers and graduated from Denby High School in 1958.
Shortly after graduation, James married his first wife, Terena Potter. Together they shared 48 wonderful years of marriage until her passing on January 15, 2009. Their union was blessed with three children: James, Edward, and Terri.
James dedicated his professional life to Chrysler, where he proudly worked from 1960 until his retirement in 1996. He took great pride in his career and the life he built for his family. In 2015, James found love again and married Mary Potter (née Robinson), with whom he shared many happy years.
A man of deep faith, James served for many years as a Eucharistic Deacon at St. Thecla Catholic Church. He was an avid reader and enjoyed bowling, visiting local casinos, collecting hats, Bibles, and religious memorabilia, and spending time with those he loved. He could often be found relaxing with family while cheering on his favorite teams, the Detroit Lions, Detroit Tigers, and Michigan State Spartans.
Above all else, James cherished his family. Nothing brought him greater pride or joy than being surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
James is survived by his loving wife, Mary Potter; his children, James W. Potter Jr., Edward S. (Caroliene) Potter, and Terri L. (Kristina) Potter-Martino; and his stepchildren, Jack Robinson, Lois (Al) Noble, Robert (Donna) Robinson, and David (Elaine) Robinson.
He was the proud Papa of Robert III, Kellen, Nicole, and Mitchell; bonus Papa to Kenny, Steve, Sarah, Jim, Dan, Andy, Hannah, Barry, and Amber; Great-Papa of Ariana and Robert IV; and bonus Great-Papa to many others.
James was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles, Robert, and Theodore Potter. He also leaves behind many cherished extended family members and dear friends who will miss him greatly.
