James Louis Sadlowski

James Louis "Jim" Sadlowski, age 96, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of love, quiet strength, and cherished memories.

Jim was born on June 24, 1930, in Detroit, Michigan, to Edward and Agnes (Louise) Sadlowski. He grew up in Detroit alongside his three siblings and treasured summers spent at "Uncle Harry's" cottage on Gifford Lake in northern Michigan. Although he never considered himself much of a hunter, he loved being outdoors with his brothers and cousins, creating memories that stayed with him throughout his life.

As a young man, Jim left high school to answer the call to serve his country, joining the United States Navy. During the Korean War, he served aboard the USS Coral Sea in the Mediterranean Sea in the early 1950s. His military service reflected the quiet sense of duty and commitment that would define the rest of his life.

After returning home, Jim built a successful career as a skilled tool and die maker, dedicating his entire working life to the trade. He took great pride in craftsmanship and precision—qualities that extended well beyond his profession.

On December 30, 1958, Jim married the love of his life, Mary Jane "Joy." Together they built a loving home and raised four children: Kathleen, Ann Marie, Benjamin, and Elizabeth. Their marriage was one of enduring partnership, shared faith, and countless treasured moments.

For more than 30 years, Jim and Joy were active members of St. Leonard Catholic Church in Warren. Jim faithfully served as an usher and belonged to the Knights of Columbus men's group. Through their church community they formed lifelong friendships and enjoyed many years of card games, backyard barbecues, laughter, and good company.

Jim found joy in simple pleasures. He loved tending his vegetable garden and caring for his lawn, famously relying on a push mower and hand tools long after others had switched to modern equipment. Summer Saturdays often ended just as he liked them—with a cold beer and a well-earned nap in the hammock after a day spent outdoors.

A patient and creative craftsman, Jim developed a passion for the art of bonsai. As a member of a local amateur bonsai club, he carefully transformed conifers into miniature works of art, demonstrating the same attention to detail that defined his career. He also enjoyed model railroading, creating an elaborate HO-scale train layout in his basement complete with a city, park, lighting, landscaping, and a working railroad. Whether cultivating a tiny tree or building an intricate miniature world, Jim found satisfaction in working with his hands.

In retirement, Jim and Joy embraced opportunities to travel, especially to destinations near lakes and the sea. They enjoyed visiting lighthouses, touring historic sailing vessels, and exploring maritime landmarks, reflecting Jim's lifelong fascination with the water.

Jim was an avid reader, especially of maritime history and fiction. He and Joy shared the daily ritual of completing the newspaper crossword puzzle together at the kitchen table, and he always welcomed a competitive game of Scrabble or cribbage. He also had a lifelong curiosity about the world, enjoying documentaries on science and nature.

Above all, Jim will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who found happiness the simple rhythms of everyday life. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Jim is survived by his children, Kathleen Tumey (David) of Chesterfield, Ann Marie Koch (Michael) of St. Clair Shores, Benjamin Sadlowski of Higgins Lake, and Elizabeth Burnis (Mark) of Caledonia; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Jim was reunited in death with his loving wife of 65 years, Mary Jane “Joy”; his daughter-in-law, Toni Sadlowski; and his grandchild, Jammi Sadlowski.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 5, from 2:00 pm until 8:00 pm with a rosary at 7:00 pm, at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 32000 Schoenherr Road, in Warren. Instate will be held the following day, Thursday, August 6, from 9:00 am until the time of the funeral service at 10:00 am, at A.H. Peters Funeral Home in Warren.
