James Edgar Woodard "Red," age 91 of Warren, died Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at the Autumn Woods Health Care Facility in Warren. He was born August 27, 1923 in Detroit, son of the late Otis and the late Catherine (nee: Mulcrone) Woodard. With thanks & praise from a grateful nation, we pay homage to James for his service to our country during World War II. As a soldier in our valiant United States Army, PFC Woodard wore the uniform proudly, having served from 1943 to 1945. With the willingness to stand in harm's way on our behalf, we extend our posthumous gratitude to James for helping to preserve the freedoms and liberties we enjoy today by his answering the call to duty with patriotism and bravery. In an era where many seem to change jobs much more frequently these days, James was very proud of his time spent with the utility supplier, Michigan Consolidated, where he extended the utmost in service excellence and dedication. Upon his well-deserved retirement, he had been with the company for over 50 years. When he wasn't working, one of the ways James loved to fill his down time was by feeding the sports fan inside. From his watching pleasures, there was no greater fan than James when it came to his iconic Tigers & Lions. "Sports in the D" reigned supreme for James, and he was a consummate banner waver, for sure. When it came to participating in sports, he was all about the Good Ol' American pastime of bowling. A little ball & pin action...enveloped by countless hours of friendship, laughter and memories that were priceless. Most of us possess those unique and distinct aspects that can tend to set us apart from the rest, and for James it was his penchant for Ford Taurus Station Wagons. For many years, he was a "One Car Guy,"...and quite devoted to his Blue Oval Cruisers. And when it came to cruisin' down the road, the word "down" held strong meaning in the winter months for James as that meant heading south to the wintry oasis of Florida. He might have been a proud Michigander, but happily became a seasonal "snowbird" amidst the sunshine and warmth of the panhandle state.Another of his favorite pastimes involved a comfy seat in front of the television watching many of the old standards on the Turner Classic Movie channel. And to make the entertainment experience even more special, it often included a serving of Apple Pie,...a la mode, of course,...then topped with the chocolaty goodness of Sander's Hot Fudge. Now, THIS guy knew how to party! And oh,...let us not forget James' other sweet tooth attraction, his love of cookies. Got Milk?A loving husband, father and grandfather, James leaves behind a storehouse of wonderful memories for all to draw upon who were blessed to know, love, and be loved by this special man. He touched a multitude of hearts and lives along the way, and enjoyed the loving touch of others in return. This was never more cherished than when it came from family, those precious treasures and souls that God provided for his journey. He will be missed immensely and loved eternally. Go Rest High, dear brother.James was the beloved husband of Marie for 71 years. Dearest father of Penny (David) Foulkes, Karen (Peter) Walkowit, and Gary (Nancy) Woodard.
