

After dedicating more than 30 years to education, he retired from East Detroit Public Schools, where he taught students from Kindergarten through Twelfth grade. A compassionate and inspiring educator, he touched countless lives, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students, colleagues, and families. His commitment to education extended well beyond the classroom. He established the East Detroit Scholarship Fund with several other colleagues to support graduating students, later serving as its president to ensure future generations had opportunities to succeed. He was also deeply involved with the East Detroit Federation of Teachers (Local 698) serving as Vice President and tirelessly advocating for his fellow educators.
A proud United States Army veteran, he honorably served his country during the Vietnam War. John specialized as a Field Artillery Radio Telephone Operator (RTO) responsible for operating and carrying portable radio equipment to maintain communication between front-line units and command posts. John worked closely with leaders and carried essential equipment; RTOs were often viewed as high-value targets by enemy forces. He earned the rank of Sergeant. In recognition of his courage and sacrifice in combat service to his nation, he earned a Purple Heart.
He was known for his unwavering optimism, quick wit, generous spirit, and ability to make everyone around him smile. Even in difficult times, his positive outlook and kind heart never wavered. He was a natural organizer who loved bringing people together, coordinating gatherings for retired teachers and hosting regular social breakfast clubs that fostered lifelong friendships.
An avid animal lover, he devoted himself to rescuing dogs, opening their home and hearts to more than fifteen rescue dogs over the past two decades. He found peace and joy in nature, spending countless hours tending to his beautiful gardens and tranquil koi pond, which became a reflection of the care and patience he showed throughout his life. John along with Ed were also the proud papas to the fur babies Lottie, Nero, and Lucky.
He was the beloved partner to Edward Craine for 22 years, who was honored to marry him on December 1, 2024. The loving brother of Diane M. Di Donato, Michael W. Di Donato, and the late Larry D. Di Donato. Cherished uncle of the late Kimberly Rose Barnes, Matthew Di Donato, and Brandon Di Donato; great uncle to Collin Barnes.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 30, from 2:00pm until 8:00pm, at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 32000 Schoenherr Road, in Warren. Instate will be on Wednesday, July 1, from 9:30am until 10:00am at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, in Warren.
