

John graduated from Lincoln High School in Warren, Michigan in the late 1950s. He won a scholarship to Eastern Michigan University for both Football & Baseball. After a preseason Football injury, John dedicated his college years to being an educator. In his earlier High School teaching career at Plymouth-Salem High School, John held the position of Drama Director leading the students to several successful play/productions. All the while going to night school to obtain his master’s degree.
John pursued his profession of High School teacher at Plymouth-Canton High School with vision and passion. He and his teaching partner Tony Monister were the 1st Michigan High School Grant Recipients for the Speeding Reading and Comprehension Lab for several consecutive years – which was a huge achievement.
After his retirement from teaching for 41 years, John took his volunteerism with Lions Club International for 11-A2 District in Southeast Michigan to another level. Along with his wife Marylin and his children, he dedicated nearly 4 years full-time working diligently to impact the local communities in need with challenges of vision and hearing. One of his pet projects was working with kids at Bear Lake Camp in Lapeer, Michigan. He successfully achieved the highest position in the local Lions Club International as District Governor of 11-A2 in 2013-2014. He and Marylin travelled to Hamburg, Germany to honored for being elected to this prestigious position.
Closing remarks from John: …he was the last man standing. John is loved and dearly missed.
John was the beloved husband of the late Marylin for 62 years. Dear father of Christine (Harold) Triche, Cindy (the late Lorenzo) Kontos-Lo Grasso, Stephanie (Scott) Kontos, John (Sherrie) Kontos, and Jenifer Liptak. Loving grandfather of Meghan, Lisa, Samantha and Jake.
Visitation for John will be held on Friday, July 10th from 3-8pm with a 7pm Rosary at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road in Warren. He will lie In State on Saturday, July 11th from 10:30am until the time of his Funeral Mass at 11am at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church, 31555 Hoover Rd in Warren. Interment at Resurrection Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in his name to Bear Lake Camp, www.bearlakecamp.org, in Lapeer, MI.
