Joe enlisted in the United States Navy in 1960 and served as an Airedale until his retirement in 1982 from NAS North Island HC-9 as a Chief Petty Officer. His Navy career remained an important and meaningful part of his life.
A lifelong fisherman, Joe spent countless hours on the waters near his home in Algonac, and knew every cove, bend, and dock that held fish. He also had a natural talent for fixing and maintaining anything mechanical—cars, boats, tools—always keeping everything in true “military order.” Joe was committed to excellence and precision in everything he did, and he loved passing on his knowledge and skills to others.
In his later years, Joe volunteered at the Selfridge Military Air Museum, helping maintain their P-3 Orion, an aircraft he was flight engineer on during his Navy career. This work allowed him to stay connected to the service he valued deeply.
Joe is survived by his wife, Ruth Van Simaeys, and his three sons: Timothy (Karen), Patrick (Layla), and Thomas (Shauna). Stepchildren Michael (Sue) Wehby, Dan (Laurie) Wehby, and Kristen (Terry) Cupp. Grandchildren, step-grandchildren, and great grandchildren Kyle (Emma), Karli (Bryce), Patrick Sullivan, Giuliana, Alessandro, Gabriella, Kaden, Teagan, Madden, Ryan (Liz), Patrick, Megan, Jessie (John), Daniel, Matt, Allison, Paulina, John, Cliff and Lillian. Siblings Chris Bonkowski (Ron) and Penny Kindt (Don). He was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Yulah, and his siblings Gwen Jonik (Hank) and Fred (Diana).
He will be deeply missed by all who loved him.
In Lieu of flowers, Chief Van Simaeys asked that donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
A committal service honoring Joseph’s dedication to his country will be held at Great Lakes National Cemetery, located in Holly, Michigan, on Friday, December 5, 2025, at 11:00 AM. We kindly ask that those wishing to pay their respects arrive 15 minutes prior to the service time.
