Born on June 8, 1939, in Lansing, Michigan, Judy was the cherished daughter of Rupert and Gladys Spaulding and their beloved only child. From an early age, she embraced life with enthusiasm, determination, and a joyful spirit that would become her trademark. At just seven years old, she discovered a passion that would remain with her throughout her life when she began playing the accordion. Music became one of her greatest gifts, and she delighted in sharing that gift with others. Whether performing for community gatherings, special celebrations, or local events, Judy lovingly referred to her performances as her “gigs.” While some of those engagements brought compensation, she found the greatest satisfaction in playing simply to bring happiness to others. Her music touched countless lives and created lasting memories for all who had the pleasure of hearing her play.
Judy was a woman of remarkable energy and vitality. She believed in staying active and embracing each day to its fullest. She was a familiar and admired presence at the Warren Community Pool, where she could often be found swimming lap after lap, frequently completing a mile or more with ease. Her determination and endurance were inspiring, and she often outswam people decades younger than herself. Beyond the pool, she enjoyed spending time on fitness machines and maintaining an active lifestyle that reflected her positive outlook on life.
Those fortunate enough to gather around Judy’s table knew firsthand that she expressed her love through food. An exceptional baker and cook, she took great pride in preparing meals and treats for family and friends. Her kitchen was a place of warmth, laughter, and togetherness. Whether it was one of her famous chocolate pies, a homemade apple pie fresh from the oven, or her legendary “Judy Rolls,” every recipe was prepared with care and shared generously. Family gatherings were made all the more special by her culinary talents, and her recipes became treasured traditions that will continue to be remembered and enjoyed for generations.
Education was an important part of Judy’s life. She graduated from Waverly High School in Lansing, Michigan, in 1957 before continuing her studies at Michigan State University. It was there, during her freshman year, that she met the young man who would become the love of her life, Paul Thorne. Their meeting marked the beginning of a beautiful love story that would span more than six decades. Judy earned her bachelor's degree from Michigan State and later completed her master's degree in education at Oakland University, preparing for a career that reflected her love of learning and dedication to helping others.
On June 17, 1961, Judy and Paul were united in marriage, beginning a partnership built on love, respect, laughter, and unwavering commitment. Shortly after their wedding, the newlyweds embarked on an unforgettable adventure, spending seven months in England while Paul served in the United States Army. Those early experiences together laid the foundation for a marriage that would flourish for 64 cherished years. Through every season of life, they remained each other's greatest supporters, sharing countless memories, adventures, and milestones. Their enduring devotion was admired by all who knew them and served as a beautiful example of a life well-lived together. Though Judy deeply mourned Paul's passing in July 2025, the bond they shared remained a source of comfort and inspiration.
Above all else, Judy treasured her family. She was a loving and devoted mother to Mark Thorne and the late John Thorne, whose memory she held close to her heart. She found immense joy in her role as grandmother to Danny (Melanie) Thorne and delighted in becoming a great-grandmother to Violet Rose Thorne. Her face would light up whenever she spoke of her family, and she cherished every opportunity to spend time with those she loved.
Judy is also survived by her dear siblings-in-law, Gary (Judy) Thorne, Sandra Kay (Frank) Borgon, and John (Sandy) Thorne, along with many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and treasured friends. To know Judy was to know someone who led with kindness, generosity, and grace. Her warm smile, caring heart, and spirited personality left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to cross her path.
Though she will be profoundly missed, Judy's legacy lives on in the music she shared, the meals she lovingly prepared, the lessons she taught, and the countless lives she touched. Her memory will remain forever in the hearts of those who loved her.
A memorial mass will be held at a later date. The family kindly asks that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Please continue to check the funeral home's website for updated service information and details.
