Kathleen grew up on the Eastside of Detroit, where she began a life filled with love, family, and the simple joys that would become such a meaningful part of who she was. She graduated from Bishop Gallagher High School, where she was a member of the swim team, and carried the spirit of dedication and kindness throughout her life.
Kathleen had a natural gift for caring for others, especially children. She worked at Westwood Elementary School as both a lunch lady and a librarian, roles that allowed her to share her warmth and kindness with generations of children. She loved taking care of kids, and her gentle, sweet nature made her someone people could count on.
In 1970, Kathleen married the love of her life, Chuck. Their marriage was a beautiful love story that spanned more than 50 years, until Chuck’s passing in 2023. Together, they built a life rooted in love, commitment, and family. Their bond was a lasting example of what it means to share a lifetime with the person you love.
Kathleen was the best mom to her only son, Scott. She was always there for him, offering unconditional love, support, and encouragement through every season of life. Her family was her world, and she was the glue that held everyone together. She was a devoted caregiver to family members, always putting others first and making sure those she loved were cared for. Her love was shown not only in her words, but in the countless things she did for the people around her.
Kathleen expressed her love in so many special ways. She was a wonderful cook, and her spaghetti was a family favorite. Her kitchen was a place of comfort, where good food and time together brought people closer. She also enjoyed creating pottery with her mother in Detroit and making her own greeting cards, sharing a little piece of her creativity and heart with others.
Kathleen was proud of her Dutch heritage. Her grandparents immigrated to the United States from Holland in the 1930s, and she cherished this connection to her family’s history. She also had a special place in Disney history as one of the first guests at EPCOT at Walt Disney World, a unique memory that reflected her own place in a world full of special moments.
Above all, Kathleen will be remembered for her sweet spirit, her generous heart, and the way she made people feel loved. She was the person who showed up, who cared for others without hesitation, and who kept her family connected through every joy and hardship. Her love was woven into everyday moments—in a home-cooked meal, a handmade card, a helping hand, or simply being there when someone needed her.
Kathleen’s greatest legacy is the love she leaves behind. She will be deeply missed, forever cherished, and always remembered.
Kathleen was the beloved wife of the late Byron "Chuck" Rivard. Loving mother of Scott Rivard. Dear sister of Richard (Claudia) Bishop and Gary Bishop. Cherished aunt of Sandy, Sue, Steve, Alex, Eric, Aaron, and Corey.
