Larry Nichols Lyon, age 87, died Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township, Michigan surrounded by his family. Larry was born March 31, 1928 in Pikeville, Kentucky, son of the late George Freeman Lyons and the late Myrtle Lyons.Larry was raised in Kentucky. As a young fourteen year old boy, he told a bit of a fib so that he could enlist in the military. Larry served in the United States Navy during World War II for over 3 years before his true age was determined. He had not yet reached the age of 18,...however, thankfully for Larry, the war effort was winding down and he was relieved of his duty with an honorable discharge.Following his military service, Larry returned stateside to Cincinnati, Ohio where he went to work as a welder,...first" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">...first working on the boats and ships for the Coast Guard, and later for trailmobile, along with being an owner of a saloon. Larry's talents as a welder lead him to the Motor City where opportunities in Detroit afforded him a position with General Motors Fisher Body, and later at the Ford Motor Company. Larry eventually retired from Ford Motors after more than 20 years of faithful service.When Larry was not working, he had a passion for fishing, both in the summer and ice fishing in the winter. Fishing was a hobby that he passed on to his children and grandchildren. Larry loved the water and the outdoors, especially those times spent in Northern Michigan where the hunting and fishing was prime. He also enjoyed the times at the cabin sitting around the table playing poker, pinochle, and any other card game he could win.Later in life, Larry and his wife moved north where he continued to enjoy the outdoors, gardening, and canning foods. Larry was also a faithful Mason having attained the 32nd degree level,...first as a member of the Detroit Lodge, and later up north. Additionally, he was a giving Christian who often volunteered his time helping others at the Glorious Freedom Mission in Detroit.Larry was the beloved husband of the late Mary, and is the dear father of Carolyn "Sue" (the late Paul) Crisp, Cheryl McKay, Timothy (Pam) Lyon, James Lyon, and the late Harold "Ray" Lyon, the late Keith Lyon, and the late Larry (Sandra) Lyon. He was also the dear brother of Alton Thomas (Katie) Lyons, and predeceased by his other seven siblings. Further family members surviving are 11 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. Visitation for Larry will be held Wednesday, March 30th from 3-9 pm at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 ½ Mile Road) in Warren. His Funeral Services will be conducted Thursday, 10:30 am at the funeral home.
