Laura was born on August 29th, 1963 in Detroit, Michigan to her loving parents Lawrence and Gloria LaPontney. In 1989 Laura married Paul Fuhr, and in 1992 Laura began to grow her family. While her children were young, Laura was not only homemaker, but she was the backbone of “Fuhr’s Valley View,” the family farm and business. She was famously known for her award-winning jams and jellies. Laura’s creative mind often showed in her unique homemade flavors, specifically Mountain Dew jelly (yes it was really made from the pop). Laura’s creations won many awards at The Michigan State Fair, and the Eastern Michigan State Fair. Laura would greet her children at the top of the farm driveway after they got off the school bus, and head back into the cider room to prepare the business loads to sell at the Detroit Eastern Market. Work weeks were jam packed for Laura. On Monday and Tuesday, she would make jam and applesauce. Wednesday and Thursday were apple cider nights, and Friday was cider-mill donut making days.
When her children were all in school, she began to further her education. She started her nursing degree at Baker College, and made the Presidents list every semester. Her first career in the medical field was as a patient sitter at Henry Ford Hospital. When she became a Registered Nurse, she worked at Henry Ford in the cardiac unit. From there, Laura moved to St. Joseph Mercy of Oakland, where she found her true love of nursing in Antepartum. She helped many pregnant and postpartum women through their pregnancies. Laura was so well-loved at St. Joseph Mercy. Her friends and coworkers would often say that “Laura was so wicked smart, with dry sarcastic humor, and wit.” She was a nurse that would care and advocate for her patients.
Besides nursing, Laura’s greatest achievement was being a Nana. She was looking forward to her retirement, where she could spend her days surrounded by her grandchildren.
Laura is survived by her husband Paul, her beloved children; Sarah (Matthew) Rittweger, Eric, Jonathan, William, and Elizabeth Fuhr, and April (Justin) Scheibner; grandchildren Benjamin Rittweger, and Tyler, Emilee, and Eli Scheibner. Laura is also survived by her loving sister Ellen LaPontney and her Fur babies. She was preceded in death by her loving father and mother Lawrence and Gloria LaPontney.
A private cremation will be held at A.H. Peters Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held at her childhood home October 30th, 2021.
In lieu of flowers the family appreciates, any donations made to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Michigan Humane Society.
