Leona A. Knapik, age 90 of Warren, died Sunday, April 25, 2010 at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township, Michigan. She was born on December 3, 1919 in Detroit, the daughter of the late Stanley and the late Marcyanna (nee: Biala) Kasinski. Always the epitome of prim & proper, her family recalls how you would never see Leona without her hair being done and her jewelry on. She was also known for being devout in her faith and quite active with the Christian Women's activities at St. Bart's Catholic Church. Her walk with God was strong and true, and prayer was a vital element of that bond she shared. She carried her rosary beads everywhere she went and prayed for her family and friends daily. It was just part of the beauty that she brought into the hearts and lives of those who knew her. Another aspect of the beauty she loved to share came in the form of her passion for gardening. And perhaps most special were her roses. With the utmost in care and nurturing, she managed to cultivate quite a display for her loved ones and fellow neighbors to enjoy. And Leona was a lady who knew how to have a lot of fun, too. If there was a rousing game of Bingo being played, you'd find her right there in the midst. And when it came time for "cutting a rug," Leona could dance a polka with the best of them. She loved to dance the polka, and gave many-a-lesson to her family in the middle of her living room, swinging to the tunes of her old records. But without question, her biggest passion was the special people in her life. She was very close to her sister, Sophie, and the two of them shared countless hours on the phone together. And aside from the jewelry that she wore, the two most precious jewels in her life were her grandchildren, Emily and Andrew. She adored them immensely, and leaves them to cherish the "Grandma moments" that were always so important to her. This faithful, fun, and fine lady leaves a legacy of love that will be remembered by all whose lives were touched through her kindness and compassion. Leona was the beloved wife of the late Stanley Knapik. She was the dear mother of Larry (Wanda Sue) Knapik. Loving grandmother of Emily and Andrew. Sister of Sophie Poplawski, and sister-in-law of Irene Kasinski. Visitation for Leona will be held on Tuesday from 3-9pm, with a 6pm Rosary Service, at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 1/2 Mile Rd) in Warren. She will lie in state from 10am until the time of Mass at 10:30am at St. Sylvester Catholic Church, 11200 Twelve Mile Road in Warren. Officiating the service will be Fr. Gary Schulte. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Detroit. Please share memories of Leona at her guest book.
