IN THE CARE OF
D.S. Temrowski and Sons Funeral Home
Lucille A. Bukowicz, age 99, of Roseville, Michigan, passed away on Saturday, October 1, 2022. Lucille was born September 27, 1923 to James and Lucy (Mattis) Szelc in Detroit, Michigan, and was the only sister to brothers Edward (Rita), Richard (Helen) and Reverend Jerome Szelc.
Lucille attended St. Stephens and St. Casimir Catholic schools, and, after graduation, worked throughout the 1940s and 50s as a secretary for an architectural firm as well as for the president of the now-defunct Montgomery Wards department store chain. Lucille enjoyed art, music, dance and culture, and was active in a local theater company in her early 20s. Her still beautiful wardrobe of tailored suits and platform heels, as well as her vintage collection of menus and napkins from some of Detroit’s swankiest cocktail lounges and restaurants, speaks to Lucille’s love of all things social and fashionable. She also loved to travel, and made it a priority in her single life, whether she was driving her own car to weekend getaways in Canada or flying to a vacation in pre-Castro Cuba.
In her late 20s, Lucille met her husband John on a double date, leading to a 69-year marriage that produced six children: Barbara (Michael) Slubowski, Colette Bukowicz, Donna Bukowicz, Annette (Michael) Packey, John Bukowicz, and Lucille Cardasis. Lucille continued to be the heartbeat of her family as it expanded through the decades, lovingly becoming “Babci” to her eight grandchildren (Alicia (Justin) Erskine, Lauren (Patrick) Keenan-Devlin, Alexandra Packey, Michael (Lauren) Packey, Lucy Mastellar, and Jonathan, Nicholas and Evan Cardasis) and “Big Babci” to her four great grandchildren (Elena and Alice Keenan-Devlin, Sasha Lucille Erskine and Myles Joseph Packey).
Active in her church for almost 70 years, Lucille was a devout Catholic who said the rosary and watched morning mass as part of her daily routine. Always physically active and socially engaged, Lucille was still kicking up her heels in her 90s at her grandson Michael’s wedding and was still going out with her wonderful circle of lady and church friends whom she loved and enjoyed. She often said how much God had blessed her. She will be dearly missed.
