

Richard Kunnath, age 84; a longtime resident of Warren, Michigan, died Sunday, June 26, 2016 at home with his family by his side. Richard was born March 2, 1932 in Detroit, Michigan, son of the late Paul and the late Frances (nee: Jerome) Kunnath. Richard was raised on Detroit's east side having attended Holy Name grade school and later graduating from St. Anthony's Catholic High School. While in high school, Richard excelled at football and was most remembered for his pitching accomplishments in baseball. During his youth he played in many sandlot leagues and later, while serving in the military, he played for his Army team in Korea.After graduating from high school, Richard accepted a position with Gordon Wilson, owner of Trumbull Chevrolet, as a car porter. Richard's career would change to skilled trades in which he took a new position as an apprentice electrician for Phil Goulding in Detroit. The electrical field appealed to Richard, but again life continued to throw him curve balls as he was drafted into military service during the Korean War.Richard served two years in the United States Army where he would attain the rank of corporal and travel for service duties in Korea. Following his honorable, military service, Richard returned home and back to his career as an electrician. Richard also returned to playing baseball and dating a young woman by the name of Susan Gadish whom he would soon marry. The young couple eventually settled in Warren, Michigan and started a family. During his children's youth, he was an active and doting father who coached many of his son's sporting teams and was present for the children's school events.Richard was a proud electrician and member of IBEW Local #58 for more than 60 years. Even after retirement, he continued to work in the union store. During retirement, Richard was never a person to stay put. He volunteered as an altar server with his church, and also volunteered at St. John Hospital in Warren helping on the oncology floor.When Richard did slow down and take time to relax at home, he could be found watching a baseball game or watching his beloved University of Michigan Football team play. He loved all sports and the competition. Richard also loved spending time with his wife Susan traveling or visiting the casinos. Richard Kunnath was the beloved husband of Susan, and the dear father of Linda (Mark) Marek and Steven (Deborah) Kunnath. He was the loving grandfather of Melody (Alan) Abel, Steven (Shelly) Kunnath, and great-grandfather of Conner, Avery, Natasha, Makenna, Braedin, and Layna Rose. Richard is also survived by many loving relatives and friends.Visitation for Mr. Kunnath will be held Wednesday, June 29th from 3-9pm, with a 6:30 pm Rosary Service, at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 ½ mile) in Warren. Mr. Kunnath will lie in state on Thursday from 10:00 am until time of the Funeral Mass at 10:30 am at St. Faustina Catholic Church, (formerly St. Edmund) in Warren. Celebrating the Funeral Liturgy will be Reverend Fr.
