Roy Lee Montgomery, age 63 of Warren, died Monday, February 4, 2013 in Windsor, Canada. He was born on January 5, 1950 in Baxter, Tennessee to the late Dallas Oakley Montgomery and the late Marthann (nee: Ford) Montgomery. With thanks and praise from a grateful nation, we pay homage to Roy for wearing the uniform and serving our country as a Rifleman in the U.S. Marines. He was proud to serve as a member of the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Division of Delta Company from 1968 to 1974. For the sacrifices made and his willingness to stand in the fray for freedom, we honor Roy for the part he played in helping to preserve the liberties we enjoy today because he was there. Following his time in Vietnam, the desire to rekindle the kind of brotherhood he enjoyed with fellow marines just naturally took its course when he joined the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter #154 in Roseville. This group of patriots provided Roy with an important and invigorating source of support with his fellow comrades-in-arms. Roy continued by taking the course one step further when, in 2002, he joined the Board of Directors of a group whose mission was to give back to the people of Vietnam through a variety of humanitarian efforts. The company was responsible for the construction of numerous houses and schools for the men, women, and children in the hopes of helping them rebuild their communities and lives. Roy's committment to this project was immeasurably compassionate, as evidenced by his returning there from 2-3 times each year. Growing up in Tennessee, Roy attended Upperman High School in his hometown of Baxter. With his service to our country falling in between his educational goals, Roy's return stateside found him persuing his strengths in the field of welding and obtaining his trade school credentials. It wasn't long thereafter that he decided to relocate to Michigan in search of greater opportunities and settled in Macomb county. Ultimately, his skills and talents were realized through his employment with Chrysler at the Tank Plant in Warren, which transcended to General Dynamics during his tenure. It is there that he extended the utmost in dedicated service until his retirement. When he wasn't working, some of his favorite pastimes included hunting, fishing, and sports,...especially the times he spent as a Softball Coach at the Warren Recreation Center. He was also known for his love of tinkering and repairing things, then taking them to the local auction venues to sell. But perhaps the most outstanding was his passion for the casinos where his luck seemed neverending. The casino was like a home-away-from-home for Roy, and he was well taken care of by the staff upon his visits, receiving many complimentary gifts along the way. Yet, without a doubt, his greatest passion in life was wrapped around his precious grandchildren whom he adored immensely. Known to them more affectionately as "Papa Roy," he poured out the best of himself each time he was blessed to share their company. To quote one of these cherubs, he was "astonishing, loving, caring, great, and he did things very well." To them and to the rest of his family, Roy leaves behind a storehouse of wonderful memories and moments that will be treasured with each remembrance they share. He will be missed immensely and loved eternally.Roy is survived by his daughter Tamara (Dave) Brasfield; his grandchildren, Justin, Jacob, Andrew, Justin B., Noah; his nephew, Melvin Montgomery. He was also survived by siblings Modena Bray, Kathleen Podgorski-Young, Oleen Mahan, Nancy Goff, Connie Montgomery, James Montgomery, Harlan Montgomery, and Jeffrey Montgomery. He was predeceased by his parents, Dallas Montgomery, Marthann Montgomery, and his 3 siblings, Edith Maxwell, Frances Haggard, and Roger Montgomery.Visitation for Mr. Montgomery will be held on Saturday 2pm -9 pm, with a 5 pm Funeral Service and Military Honors, at the D.S.
