Sami Majid Alhakim, age 76 a resident of Warren, died Thursday, June 30, 2011 at St. John Macomb Hospital in Warren Michigan. Sami was born October 15, 1934 in Iraq the son of the late Majid and the late Regina Al-Hakim. Sami was born into a large family of seven siblings. Being the baby, he was quite an adventurous young man. He frequently displayed himself as a successful athlete, acquiring 14 prominent ping pong titles which included the national champion of Iraq. Of course, one national championship wasnt enough for Sami, as he also earned a national title for the 100 meter dash. Its easy not to be aware of such details about Sami because his passions seemed limitless. He loved to garden. He loved the water. He loved traveling the world, whether it be to North America, Europe, South America, Africa, New Zealand or the Middle East. He loved to barbeque. He loved to make the best chili in the world. He loved beating everyone at cards and then giving their money back. He loved picking wild fruits and vegetables. He loved watching baseball, football, tennis, golf, Texas Hold em, and "The Young and the Restless." He loved track suits. He loved to work hard and carve his own path. He loved to learn. He loved to share his knowledge. He loved his wife Ghusoon, and his three children Denise, Anthony, and Jonathon. He loved teaching them respect, honor, and discipline, and this love transcended to his grandchildren, Alyssa, Stephen, and Troy. And Sami simply loved people. He loved to share his laughter and his smile. And when you saw that smile, saw the twinkle in his eyes; that welcoming gaze that instantly valued you for all your potential, you knew that he loved life. And we loved his too. Visitation for Mr. Alhakim will be Friday July 1, 2011 from 5-9pm at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 1/2 mile). Mr. Alhakim will lie in state Saturday from 10:30am at St. Sylvester Catholic Church until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11:00am. Officiating the Funeral Liturgy will be Rev. Fr. William Siebert. Please share memories of Sami at his guest book.
