Shelley Gordon Moen, age 75, died Friday, June 26, 2015 at St. John Macomb Hospital in Warren, Michigan. Shelley was born in Manitoba, Canada, son of the late Leonard Alfred Moen and the late Antonia Delia (nee: Leveque) Moen.Shelley's family moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota where he was raised and from where he graduated high school. Following high school, Shelley served in the United States Army and was stationed at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison Township, Michigan. Shelley achieved the rank of Corporal before completing his military service and receiving his honorable discharge. With thanks and praise from a grateful nation, we pay homage to Shelley for his service to our country and extend our posthumous gratitude for his answering the call to duty with patriotism and pride. Shelley attended the Fire Academy where he received the training and skills to become a firefighter. With these skills in hand, he was ultimately hired into the East Detroit Fire Department where he faithfully served the community for the next 29 years. Making this his career home, Shelley retired as a Fire Captain from the, now renamed, City of Eastpointe. Mr. Moen raised his family in Eastpointe where he would reside for more than 34 years before eventually moving to Warren, Michigan. When Shelley was not working, a couple of his favorite pastimes were enjoyed in the outdoors,...one of them being his joy in the game of golf. A sunny day on the links with a friend, or a gang at times, always made for all kinds of fun and friendly competition. His other outdoor enjoyment involved giving his bicycle a workout, something he did each & every day. As for his other pastimes, they were enjoyed giving Ole Lady Luck a run for her money with each trip to the casinos. Earlier memories included the visits he and his wife took to the ever-popular Las Vegas,...which were eventually exchanged for the more local venues that became part of Detroit's revitalization. The glitz and glamour of Vegas had its place, but the casinos in Detroit offered Shelley just the right blend of gaming and entertainment to fill his down time. Yet his gaming wasn't centered merely around casinos,...he also loved hitting the horse track and trying his luck with the running of the ponies. Yet of all the pastimes and passions Shelley enjoyed, the love and care he held for his family was matchless,...especially when it came to his adoring grandchildren. They were truly his greatest joy in life and the apple of his eye. Family meant the world to Shelley,...and it was sincerely felt and shared. Of course, Shelley also possessed much pride for his work as a firefighter, and the place he held in the Eastpointe community. Shelley was the beloved husband of Sandra A. Moen, and is the dear father of Scott (Sharon) Moen, Kimberly (David) Tropf, Todd (Lisa) Moen, and Shaun (Tania) Moen. He was also the loving grandfather of Kristina, Rachel, Sarah, Deniro, and Angelina.Visitation for Mr. Moen will be held Sunday, June 28th from 3-9pm at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 1/2 Mile) in Warren. Funeral Services will be held Monday, 11am at the Funeral Home. Please share memories of Shelley at his memory book above.
