Shirley Ann Raese, 87, of Eastpointe, MI, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on June 5, 1937, in Pinconning, MI, where she attended a one-room schoolhouse before graduating from Pinconning High School, where she enjoyed her time as a cheerleader.
In 1957, Shirley married the love of her life, Bob, with whom she shared nearly 68 years of marriage. A dedicated homemaker and stay-at-home mom, Shirley focused on her family until her youngest child reached middle school. She then returned to school and worked for many years as an executive assistant to the Vice President of EDS/General Motors.
Shirley loved to travel, particularly enjoying family vacations and visits with extended family across the country. Her family and friends meant the world to her. Shirley shared a very special bond with her siblings, frequently checking in or calling just to say hi and catch up on family news. Known for her exceptional listening skills and her ability to offer encouraging words, Shirley was always there for those in need. Her generosity was legendary; she often quietly picked up the bill before anyone had the chance to notice. A lover of laughter, Shirley was also known for her beautiful singing voice. For years, she was a member of a trio with two of her closest friends, performing at church.
She had a special fondness for flowers, with roses, peonies, and lilacs among her favorites. A gifted cook, Shirley often downplayed her talents when complimented. She had an incredible gift for hospitality and enjoyed sharing her home with others. Her days always began with a cup of coffee and her Bible. Strong in her faith, she was a constant source of encouragement and support to those around her. Shirley’s nightly routine often included watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy with Bob.
Shirley is survived by her loving husband of nearly 68 years, Robert Raese; her children, Rob (Elizabeth) Raese and Beth Raese; and her daughter-in-law, Linda (Jerry) Ladue. She was a cherished grandmother to Ron Raese, Erin (Tyler) Hayward, Emily Raese, Annika Raese, and Henry Raese. Shirley is also survived by her siblings, Ruth Penner, Bill (Diane) Schmidt, Bob (Amy) Schmidt, and Fritz (Lou Ann) Schmidt; her brother-in-law, Dick Gunderson; her sister-in-law, Maryann Raese; and many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Marion Schmidt; her son, Ron Raese; her father- and mother-in-law, Henry and Elizabeth Raese; her sister-in-law, Marie Gunderson; and her brothers-in-law, Dave Penner and John Raese.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date for family and close friends.
