

Sloane Shelby was born October 24, 1949, to the union of Velma Maggie McCree and Wesley Shelby in Laurel, Mississippi. He was the youngest of eight children. He attended the New Orleans, LA. Public school system graduating from Joseph Samuel Clark High School in 1968. After high school, he moved to Detroit, Michigan.
Sloane started his career at General Motors and shortly thereafter was drafted in the United States Army where he stayed for two years. He retired after working there for 34 years in 2004. He enjoyed traveling, church, and family. He traveled to many states and abroad.
He served as a Deacon at Rehoboth Baptist Church where he joined in 2011. He was the treasurer of Our Sisters Keeper Ministries. He was a good and faithful servant up to his passing. He loved the Lord and His saints. He truly loved his family. Sloane was always visiting, planning meals, and willing to assist any family member in need. He loved helping others as well, so he served as a counselor to encourage those struggling with day-to-day challenges.
Sloane was quiet, loving, always willing and ready to help, and never gave a direct yes or no answer. It was “I guess, maybe, well you know how it is, or I will let you know later.” He had many special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Wesley and Velma Shelby, two brothers Willie and Billy; three sisters Lottie, Lola, and Esther.
He leaves to cherish his memory one brother Thomas (Alma) Shelby from Detroit, Michigan; one sister Elaine (Julius) Shelby-Crawford from Adan Pennsylvania; six sons Sloane Dwayne, Damon Keith, David Joseph, Shannon (Sabrina), Brandon; three daughters Shardai, Mykeda (Jeese), and Sanwanna. He had twenty-six grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many relatives and friends.
