Thomas Wayne Barnes, age 52 of Auburn Hills, died Friday, July 26, 2019 at Beaumont Hospital in Troy. He was born March 16, 1967 in Detroit, son of the late Jack and the late Marjorie (nee: Anderson) Barnes.
Employed by the City of Warren as a Waterworks Systems Operator, Tom was an integral part of the team that served diligently to keep the water flowing freely throughout the city. He was a hard worker who served with dedication and integrity.
“Serving others” was always important to Tom, and this was never more evident than through his enlistment in the U.S. Army at the young age of eighteen. With patriotism at his core and bravery as his cloak, Tom stepped up to be a part of what countless man & women have done by answering the call of our nation and standing up for America. So it is, with thanks and praise from a grateful nation, that we honor Thomas for his service to our country and his willingness to stand in harm’s way for the sake of freedom. We are the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave,…because of soldiers like Tom.
When work wasn’t calling, Tom usually headed for the outdoors where he always felt at home. He loved getting back to nature and enjoying the many highlights that the Mitten has to offer,…especially when it included a trip to Glennie, Michigan, one of Tom’s prime locations for outdoor fun. Whether he was hunting, fishing, or 4-Wheeling, he was always in his wheelhouse of outdoor pleasures. Yet when it came to his favorite sport, there was nothing that could compete with his love of kayaking. Hopping in his kayak and navigating the many waters that Michigan contains provided Tom countless hours of peacefulness and serenity as his oar directed his path. Tom created many wonderful kayaking memories, but perhaps none more treasured than the family vacation to Pictured Rocks when he shared the waters with his wife, Candice. Seeing that colored spectacle from the vantage point of a kayak was absolutely breathtaking, and a precious moment captured for these two lovebirds.
Tom was also quite fond of a good game of cards, and one of his favorites was the ever-popular game of UNO. A compelling and competitive source of fun without the gambling element, it was a game that everyone could enjoy. Plus, it was a family favorite, as well, as it’s fun factor drew people to the game,…and that’s what made it so attractive to Tom. He loved when his little family came together to enjoy those special moments in life that soon became lasting memories. A loving husband and father, Tom lived purely and simply, and wore a smile that warmed your heart. He touched a multitude of souls in his brief journey with us, and leaves behind a genuine and impactful imprint upon the hearts of all who were blessed to share his presence. Thomas leaves us far too soon, but not without imparting the best of himself, and a love to be cherished and embraced with each memory shared. He will truly be missed. Rest in peace, Thomas.
Thomas was the beloved husband of Candice, and the loving father of Nick and Chris Barnes. Dear brother of John (Kathy) Barnes and Brian Barnes. Son-in-law of Frank and Laura Odzianna. Cherished friend of Kathy Allen.
A Memorial Visitation for Tom will be held Friday, August 2nd from 5-9 pm at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 ½ Mile Rd) in Warren. A Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, 11:00 am at the funeral home.
